For The NYC Bachelor

Postby SimpleWay » Tue Jun 30, 2009 12:46 am

Dear Smart Spenders,

New to NYC and want to get a great card!!

I probably spend approx $1,500 per month on my credit card. Since I live in NYC my credit card expenses are:

-Groceries (Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Food Emporium)
-MTA Subway Tickets
-NJ Transit Tickets

What I want (can be more than one card) is:

-Cash back (actual $$ but I don't spend money on gas or that many groceries)
-Airline Miles (preferably a brand name airline)
-Other Good Ideas for mid-twentys person who generally just has fun?

I currently have:
Chase United Mileage Plus Visa card and I also use Chase for my checking. I like it b/c the online-internet interface is easy and convenient to pay my bills in one place. I belive I got the card b/c it offered 25,000 miles originally but don't see it doing much for me lately.

I have A+ credit and want to know my options but am so confused. Do I go to different banks, apply online. Do different banks offer different cards? What do I do....

Please someone just recommend which cards would be best based on my info.

Thank you so much!

Kind Regards,

So you only want straight up cashback and you're willing to do more than one card? I know the Discover More gives 5% cashback on a bunch of categories.

And yeah the Chase Mileage Plus card is not worth the annual fee unless you travel a lot.
Stop talking crap about him!

The American Express Blue Cash may be another good card to consider. The drawback of that card is that the rebate is only awarded annually.

If you haven't got one already another worth checking out may be the Chase Freedom card since you use taxis etc a lot. I think that is one of the categories it gives you tiered cashback on if it is one of your top 3 categories of spending. I have the card though and I stopped using it because I feel the reward redemption system isn't too fair.

For cashback I would almost say the Amex Blue Cash but the 5% cashback is only at supermarkets, gas stations and drugstores. Instead I'd go with the Discover More card. The rewards are a lot more flexible.

For miles you should check out the Amex Blue Sky or the Miles by Discover.

You should see if Chase will let you convert your account into a Freedom card, that way you're covered at places that don't take AMEX/Discover.
