Sorry. I checked the photograph. " Do Not Remove from Stores" is not a Vanilla card. It the placeholder for the stores when all cards are sold out with bar code for the stores to reorder additional vanilla cards. I see it all the time at the bottom of the pack where current stock of vanilla reload cards are stacked.

Anyone have more info about why there are two variations of VR cards?

As far as I can tell there is no advantage for anyone to buy this card. It's still the same fee but just to buy a card that works in half the places of the other VR cards. Also I'm curious that if someone were to buy this card if it would actually work in reloading Bluebird, or if it's an entirely different set of PINs that wouldn't work with AMEX

I tried to load them and it didn't work. I was sad.

Now that's a big improvement for the BlueBird. If the new Discover checking account does offer 10 cents per transaction/bill pay/checks, nothing will beat that.

If Discover would allow VR or MP reloads I'd agree.

What makes you think they'd do that?

So my story for the day...

Decided to give Bluebird a try. Stopped at one of the local Wal-Mart stores, and found the starter kits by the register. Went on a hunt to find the Vanilla Reloads, but they had none. At the checkout, some customer was telling the 3 employees standing around about her "horror" experience at the gas station with the Bluebird. Apparently, she had gotten fuel and had an issue. Seems the gas station was doing a pre-authorization for either $50 or $100 and it wouldn't go through on her Bluebird. She must have mentioned 5 or 6 times how she was DONE with the Bluebird. I just smiled to myself and shook my head.

At my checkout, the guy asked how much I wanted to put on the card. He said it was minimum $1. And it had to be cash or debit. I said that was fine because I'd be loading up with the Vanilla cards. So he rang me for $6. All good so far.

On the way home, I decided to stop in one of the local CVS stores and see if I could find some reloads. As luck would have it, they had about a dozen. I grabbed one just to see if I could put it on my credit card. There must have been 8 people in line, while I saw the manager restocking shelves that were emptied for Easter. Just as I was getting to the front of the line, the cashier called for help, and the manager came over to assist. I was next. My heart sunk. I was HOPING to get the girl who was clearly overworked and probably wouldn't care if I was going to use a credit card. But now I had the store manager. I handed him the Vanilla card and my CVS card. I swiped my Chase Freedom, manager looked at the card like the POS told him to, told me go ahead and sign the POS, and handed me my receipt. DONE!

Once I got home, I found the nasty surprise that you can't load up the starter kit with the Vanilla reload. So now I have a Bluebird with $1 available until my real one comes in the mail. I also have $50 in this Vanilla reload that I can't do anything with for a week or two. :)

So all in all, not a bad deal. For me, the benefit of the Bluebird is being able to pay my mortgage and car loan and get the points for that. Even if I can't do it with bonus categories. That's 2000 points a month I wasn't getting. When that is in the 5x bonus, I'll make out like a bandit for a while. Either way, I'll earn a flight per year just for paying two of my bills. I'll take it.
