Cards for bonuses

Postby FutureBillionaire » Mon Mar 04, 2013 6:51 pm

How many folks are apping for cards they don't need around here just to acquire the bonuses? I'm considering a move to this strategy to defray costs of travel.
Gas: Discover It, Penfed Platinum Rewards x2, Chase freedom, Citi TYP
Plane tickets: CSP
Groceries: AMEX BCP, Penfed Platinum Rewards,Citi TYP
Clothes: Express, Amex BCP, Discover IT
Amazon: Citi Forward, Cash +
Restaurants: Citi Forward, Chase Freedom, Discover IT, CSP
Hotels and other travel: Discover Escape, CSP
Movies: BofA travel rewards visa signature(fandango), Discover IT, Citi Forward, Freedom
Bars, clubs, tomfoolery: CSP, Citi Forward, Discover IT, Freedom
Balance transfers: Kroger 123 rewards
Bill Pay: Chase Ink Plus, Citi Forward
Everyday spending: Bofa Accelerated cash rewards amex, Discover Escape

I've done it several times.
NFL Visa - $400
Citi Dividend Platinum MasterCard - $300 (I think)
Southwest Visa - $500 Amazon GC minus $99 annual fee
Chase Freedom - $150

Only the Southwest Visa was cancelled, though I kept that for 2 years since I flew SWA a lot back then.
I converted the Dividend to a Forward card.

Amex BCE: 3% grocery, 2% gas
Bank of America Better Balance Rewards MC: $25/quarter bonus
Barclaycard Rewards Visa Signature: 2% gas, groceries, utilities
Capital One Quicksilver Visa Signature: 1.5% everything
Chase Freedom Visa Signature: 5% rotating
Citi Forward Visa: 5% restaurants/fastfood, movie theaters, amazon.com
Discover It: 5% rotating
SallieMae MC: 5% Groceries, Gas, Amazon
US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature: 5% electronic stores, restaurants
Sock Drawered: Chase Sapphire, Chase Amazon[/size]

I would not call new card sign up as for initial bonus only but can call it until useful life ends. It not only includes promotional cash back or points but also promotional higher rate cash back for initial 6 months or occasional one year.

If at the end of the period, it does not remain competitive, it can be replaced by another one.

I thought about getting the Chase CSP card when I first joined this board. Then I realized that compared to other cards I was apping for, the CSP would likely end up getting used during the bonus period and then not used much again. Frankly, since I already carry an Amex Platinum, I don't have use for a second travel card. And the annual fee at year 2 would be problematic. That's just not worth having it in the first place in my book.
Cards:
American Express Platinum (NPSL)
Penfed Platinum Reward Visa ($28K)
Chase Freedom Visa ($25K)
Fidelity American Express ($20K)
American Express Blue Cash Preferred ($20K)
Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard ($20K)
Citi Thank You Preferred Visa ($9.5K)
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($7.5K)
US Bank Cash + Visa Signature ($7K)
Discover IT ($4K)

I've been playing that game. Flew to Europe in January for $117 (taxes). Belize in February for $64 (again, taxes) and Curaçao also in February for $64 (taxes). The Europe was due to my Delta SkyMiles card bonus added to the 50,000 MR bonus for my business gold AmEx. The two Caribbean trips were thanks to the British Airways Visa. I still have 43,000+ Chase UR points to spend. Hmmmm....

A bonus is almost a requirement for me to app for a card. I probably will not app for the discover It, which is the next card on my list at the moment, until they offer me some sort of cash bonus.
(01/10) - Wells Fargo VISA Platinum
(05/10) - Techron Advantage
(10/12) - Amex BCE
(02/13) - Chase Freedom VISA
(09/13) - Discover It
(03/14) - Sallie Mae WMC
(09/15) - Citi Double Cash WEMC
(09/16) - US Bank Cash+ VISA Signature

Welcome to the club.

First thing's first.....don't app to ANY credit card unless it has a solid bonus. Wasting INQ's on mediocre cards will hinder your ability to begin bonus churning.

Feel free to get the links of some good cards from this website.

Recommend:
-Delta Gold Skymiles
-Chase Sapphire preferred (just noticed you already have this. hopefully you got the good 40k bonus)
-Southwest Visa
My Limits:

The Southwest Card bonus is very appealing. I know that I would not otherwise use that card.

I live for the bonuses, although they aren't what they used to be. I pretty much depend on making $1,200 a year in bonus offers alone. My only advice is don't just go for any bonus, be picky. Otherwise you end up with a bunch of $50 bonuses but your credit score starts taking the hit.
