I had raised this concern a while ago. Yes, you can save money using Bluebird this way but at some point for me, the effort tends not to be worth it just because of how much it bends my time commitment to other things.
Cards:
American Express Platinum (NPSL)
Penfed Platinum Reward Visa ($28K)
Chase Freedom Visa ($25K)
Fidelity American Express ($20K)
American Express Blue Cash Preferred ($20K)
Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard ($20K)
Citi Thank You Preferred Visa ($9.5K)
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($7.5K)
US Bank Cash + Visa Signature ($7K)
Discover IT ($4K)

I had a very successful shopping/gift card hunting trip today. I was able to buy a green dot MP at Rite Aid with a CC. Also, my local grocery store(Hannaford) restocked the $500 MC GC's so I can use them at Sam's Club and get 4% cash back. WooHoo!

It's just a stop at a store for me. Just like picking up some groceries. Even if I decide not to mail any checks, I will still use the card at places I can't normally get cash back. It's worth it to me. I will use BlueBird at the car mechanic, when shopping for clothes, and other random places like car washes. It's going to be great for me.

I'm also going to use BlueBird to withdraw cash. I only withdraw 60 bucks a month or so. That means I will earn rewards on my atm transactions.

In this economy, I need every dime I can get.

Agreed. I rarely go out just for GC's. It's almost always while grocery shopping, running errands, etc.

Also agree. I'm on pace for about 4K of tax free $$. I'll take it.

Hopefully CVS and these other places will continue to allow us to use credit cards to buy the reloads.

I found some VRs at Daily's. I don't want to test it out until I receive my real Bluebird in the mail. I don't want to be stuck with it. I didn't see a sign saying that I couldn't buy them with a credit card.

Ok, while in Virginia I discovered that almost every CVS allows you to buy Vanilla Reload cards with your CC. You just have to go to 3 different ones, or go on 3 separate days. I got all 3.

Active Cards:
Chase Freedom 10+10 Visa Signature ($9k Limit - 8/2012)
Chase Sapphire Preferred ($10k Limit - 2/2013)
Chase Ink Plus ($7k Limit - 2/2013)
Discover IT ($9.5k Limit - 10/2012)
AMEX Zync (No Pre-set Limit - 1/2010)
AMEX Blue Cash Everyday ($20k Limit - 1/2013 - Backdate to 1/2010)

Nice VR hunting. You already got a BlueBird account? What card did you purchase them with?

Yes I have a Bluebird account -- I got it specifically for this purpose. And I used the Chase Freedom. They let the first 2 go through, then the fraud department blocked the 3rd one. I called the CSP help line, they got me to the fraud team right away, answered like 20 questions to verify it's actually me doing the charges, and then they released the card so all transactions would go through without issue.
