Home Improvement Rewards

Postby RonJonson » Sun Feb 10, 2013 4:38 pm

Hello everyone, I'm looking for the best card for small-medium home improvement projects. I say that because I don't plan to run a balance on the cards so rewards trump low Apr. The only large home improvement store in the area is a Menards
They offer a store branded card that offers a 2% annual cash back but I was looking for something better. As a note they do not accept American express.
Looking forward to seeing what everyone is using

Priceline Visa offers 2% everywhere. Discover is running a 5% promo next quarter but there's a max of $75 in rewards.

Of the 3 home improvement stores- Lowes is typically 5 to 10% more expensive than Home Depot. Menards is about 2 to 3 % cheaper than Home Depot similar specification items compared to Home Depot. However, Lowes own manufactured items under Allen & Roth brand are the best in quality and costs which other two stores cannot match.

If you considering home improvement project and plan to go with Lowes, you can do one of the following options
1) Contact stores manager with details of your project and he has authority to grant 10% discount
2) Buy Lowes10% discount coupon on eBay which sells for about $2 to $3 which is valid for $5000 purchases. These have expiry period.

If you are considering, Home Depot and if your renovation material cost is more than say $3000, contact Home Depot manager who can then take up Home Depot corporate office and come back in 2 days to get a decent discount.
The discount varies on items- Practically no discount on studs, lumber & sheetrock to high discount on plumbing and bath accessories which have a significant mark up and high profit margins.

As I mentioned in my previous posts, it does not matter how much cash back % you get, as long as your purchase price is lowest after exploring all options.

is that Lowes a store charge card meaning you can only use it in lowes or is it a store credit card which has a visa, master card or American express logo where he/she can use it all over?

I would suggest your chase Freedom or citi Forward, there both nice cards you get 1% back I can understand they don't take American Express so your Hilton is out but why not use what you already have?

DavidNY - thanks for pointing that out. I have been looking at the IT card, I'll take a closer look now.

nishant - I appreciate the different point of view. I haven't thought of negotiating to get the best price up front. It's easy to get caught up in percentages on the back end but would be much easier to just take a percentage off the top.

Money Card - My girlfriend wants to apply for the Menards card so I figured I would find out if there was anything better

there are certainly cards better than that store card. for somebody who has no credit cards and is wondering which card is best for home improvement and other places if they were approved for all major credit cards I would say the Capital1 venture and Bank of America travel card, the reason is most cards give a 2 to 6% back on grocerys, gas and drug stores , But menards is a home improvement and Bank of America cash rewards, the penfed would only give 1% back . but if somebody were to be approved priceline offers 2% back .

maybe the answer to your question is priceline based on the points system. for other things Priceline might not be the best credit card
in the world. but for points at menards this might be the card.

As I was saying capital1 venture card gives 1.25 miles per dollar spent and the Bank of America travel card gets 1.50 points per dollar spent.
