If you use the card at Kroger, it will recognize it as a gas station.

Say the wife wants to buy something for her mom at the local craft store, is it better for me to use the 1% cashback on the Amex or the 1x points on the penfed plat rewards? BTW I got both of those cards in addition to my current kroger card. Right now I dont see a reason to use the Kroger card anymore right?

I would recommend that you use the penfed plat. The points are available to you quicker. Amex takes a billing cycle to credit you for the rewards. It's annoying.

Question...back in July I used 10K points on the penfed to get $100 visa card....went to do the same today after as I had 11K in points and its saying the redeem value went up to 11,900 points to get $100 back? Did I miss the increase in points required for rewards or what?

Yep you missed it. They devalued points a couple of days ago.

Yeah the card is pretty pathetic now. And they are changing it to 3/2/1 for 2014, instead of 5/3/1.

There was language on the site saying that we could maintain the higher points structure if you signed up for direct deposit. I can't seem to locate that anywhere now.

I'm assuming that I can keep my 5/3/1 structure since I don't have the visa signature version. This card is useless to me as a 3/2/1 card. I can get better rewards elsewhere through Chase Freedom and Discover for gas.

On one of the forums. Cant remember which one... Not sure if its 100% accurate, but they devalued point without notice, so I wouldnt be surprised...

Yes, it went through various stages. First the Sig was moving to 3/2/1 after Oct. Then, for a brief period, there was language about "qualifying" accounts, that each month, if you had one of those products, you would get 5/3/1 for that month. But then that went away, and the 3/2/1 for the card was moved to 1/1/14.

That's for the Signature of course. Then people have reported being told by CSRs:

1) Everyone with Plat Rewards will be moved to Sig version at some point
2) No, Plat Rewards users will stay with that card but get the 3/2/1 rewards. In Dec or in June (and probably other dates)
3) The Plat Rewards will go to ZERO rewards, encouraging users to switch.

No idea if any of those are true, but from the beginning of the Sig I couldn't see how the Plat Rewards could have better rewards than the flagship card, and I would expect changes to Cash Rewards too for the same reason.
