Please Help! Citi Forward Student

Postby me08053 » Sat Feb 02, 2013 5:58 pm

Fiance' applied for Citi Forward for students to get the 5 pts on dining out/ fast food. She was approved for a 4K limit and we thought this would be a perfect way to build her credit history (she is 22).

Received the card and nowhere does it mention the 5 pts categories.

Called Citi and they said that they gave us a Citi Forward card and not the student card. Stated that the Citi Forward card does not give 5% back in those categories.

Went up to a supervisor and they said that there is nothing they can do. If we want the student card with those benefits we need to reapply for a whole new card and thus taking another hit on the credit report. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to get this card changed? Do I need to go higher than the supervisor? Is it okay to cancel this card (haven't even used it yet) in protest or will that be too much of a hit on the credit score we are trying to build?

I'm really frustrated and would like any help you can provide. Thanks!

Agreed. It sucks because I assume board members are going to suggest leaving the card open but I really want to take my business elsewhere. Also we were getting this card to build her credit history and get some useful rewards. Now we get no rewards. If it is suggested to keep it open it will be put in a sock drawer to never be used. We will need a new dining out card.

If you wish to boycott Citibank on principle and not get the student version that has the rewards for books, some amazon, restaurant, fast food, entertainment/media purchases; then maybe the US Bank Cash+ and you could choose restaurants and Fast Food for your 5% back categories.

Apparently this was all a case of a customer service rep that wasn't educated on his own products. I'll update after the first dining purchase to see if we get the proper rewards.

I'm not an expert on this card, but I was pretty sure all Citi Forward cards got the 5 pts per dollar spent at restaurants/etc that you had mentioned. Hopefully you get the rewards! Keep calling until you reach a knowledgeable CSR...it might take a few tries unfortunately!

I think you have to wait for the end of your billing cycle to see the amount of rewards earned as well as a breakdown. Also, if this is all true, how does it affect existing cardholders?

You don't have to wait until the end of the billing cycle to see; once the transaction posts you can hover your mouse above it and click the + icon to see the details of what category it is coded coded as. Yes, you have to wait until the statement cuts to actually get the points, but if you know the category and a CSR has confirmed that the previous CSR was mistaken and it is a category that earns 5x points, it should get 5x points and if it doesn't you can call and ask for the points based on how you were advised by the CSR.
