I think we are well within our right to only use the cards in ways that are an advantage to us. The banks have to make sure the cards are at least somewhat attractive if they want to keep collecting all of those swipe fees.

I agree it is perfectly ethical to use the cards in this way, but the banks count on a certain amount of their customers to not use them this way in order to offer this level of rewards...the swipe fees don't net them 5%.
Sole Ownership Cards:
1st Financial Bank Platinum Student Visa, $500 CL, Open Since 3/2012
Citi Forward Student Visa, $6k CL, Open Since 10/2012
Costco TrueEarnings Amex, $6k CL, Backdates to 1/2012
SallieMae Rewards Barclay Mastercard, $2.5k CL, Open Since 4/2013
Jointly Owned Cards (co-owner with mom, not AU, used and paid only by me):
Chase Amazon Rewards Visa Signature, $2k CL, Open Since 8/2012
US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature, $13.5k CL, Open Since 10/2012
Authorized User (Parents Pay/Use)
Costco TrueEarnings Amex $29.4k CL, AU since 11/2012

I also agree they are free to change their programs at any time they see fit. And I as the customer am free to take my business elsewhere. I have no problem with these concepts and in fact wouldn't want it any other way. Let them compete for our business.

It sounds like we are pretty clear that using the rewards program they set up in a way that maximizes our rewards is no more abuse than them trying to maximize their profits. I get weary of the concept that I owe corporate America a living, because as they've made VERY plain they sure don't owe us one. Besides, being such uber rugged individualists anyway as they claim to be, they should relish the challenge of competing in the marketplace and let the best bank win, rather than turn to the socialism they hate (unless they are the ones getting it) with bailout funds.
Just saying, really. I think we are all mostly on the same page. Just didn't like the term "abuse" used in context with rewards programs.

Everytime I look at the Freedom, I'm not that impressed because I already have GAS at 5% all year round.

The CSP has a nice sign up bonus, but it only gives double points. I can get double points with the Discover miles with no annual fee.

The Citi Dividend has sorry categories.

I'm looking for the next big thing.

I'm ready for the next big thing, too. Not too long ago when I finally decided to look at the Cash+ and see what all the fuss was about, it got nerfed. The only thing I'm going to work on this year is my CLI's. If I can get my credit union card to 20K, Discover to 10 or 15K, and Chase to 15K, I'll be where I want to be. Until the next big thing comes along I'm kinda done/bored with what's available. Since I won't be apping for anything until the next big thing comes out, I'll be ready when it does.
Amex Platinum
Amex BCP 21K
Amex SPG 5K
Barclaycard Arrival Plus WEMC 5K
Chase Sapphire Preferred 23.5K
Credit Union 10K
Discover IT 7.75K
