My local Walgreens has a huge supply of gift cards and my local grocery stores seem to have stopped selling $500 Visa/Amex/MC cards :-/. Which makes my BCP only good for actual groceries lol. Darn....

Damn. I would change grocery stores haha.

If a person spends cash money- s/he is most careful how s/he spends. Then comes credit card and then comes gift card when person is least careful.
Even when you give gift to yourself any gift card to get 5% cashback, you land up in spending gift card money less carefully thinking that it does not cost you anymore. But it your own money.
Nevertheless, I for one, discourage myself from buying gift cards for the sake of it. I prefer to get 5 % cash back only when I actually spend money.

That could be true for some people, but not me. I have everything budgeted out and buy gift cards accordingly for things that I spend money on or plan to spend money on anyways. You might as well get cash back on things you were going to buy anyways. Nothing I buy is bought just because I have a gift card.
