What is the best credit card combination?

Postby rchan » Wed Jul 04, 2012 5:43 pm

Hey Everyone-

I'm looking to find the best credit card combination to maximize rewards and/or cash back.

I plan to use the Freedom for daily purchases during the rotations to maximize my 5 points per dollar (bonus points are also given for opening a Chase Checking when using the Freedom).

I would also like to use the Sapphire Preferred for travel, dining; I'll be flying once a month. Chase's Ultimate Rewards also makes it flexible to transfer Ultimate Rewards from the Freedom to the SP.

However, I also like the AMEX Blue Cash since the majority of my monthly spending will be on groceries and gas--only those categories will go on the BC, unless the Freedom rotation is occurring. Any thoughts/Opinions of maximizing my points? The "table" below is just a sample budget outline.

Rent $659.00
Groceries $175.00
Restaurants $75.00
Utilities $75.00
Gas $200.00
Flight $276.00
Internet/TV $90.00
Insurance $100.00
Gym $30.00

See my signature below. I would look at the US Bank Cash+ card, just released. I found out about it from a another thread on this website. If this card is as good as it looks, it will alter what I've been doing to maximize rewards.

http://www.usbank.com/credit-cards/cash-plus-signature.html
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (Amazon.com, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

I've got 2/3rds of this (Checking for the $200 bonus that I now have to keep for a few months + Freedom). How do I maximize the Chasiness?

Have you considered the AMEX Premier Rewards Gold card? It seems like your highest spending levels [aside from rent] match up with the card's bonus multipliers (3x airfare, 2x gas and groceries).

If it's cash back you want, though, look elsewhere; the US Bank Cash+ card looks good too.
Cards In Use
Chase Sapphire Visa Signature (Downgraded from Sapphire Preferred)
American Express Platinum (Upgraded from Premier Rewards Gold)
Citi ThankYou Preferred World Elite MasterCard
