You can do it 100% on amazon.com. Buy a $25 email delivered gift card and use the visa prepaid card to pay for it. Send the amazon gift card to yourself. Once you receive it, go into your amazon account and select "apply a gift card to my account". The next time you make a purchase, Amazon will apply the credit balance first, then charge your credit card for the remaining amount if your purchase exceeds your credit balance.

By the gift card from Amazon you're saying? Now I'm confused.

Well, bummer! I have been waiting for a few inquiries to get old before I applied. Just a few days ago the "Apply in Branch" wasn't there. You don't have to be a customer of US Bank to apply for the card in the branch, do you? I did notice on the website that there is an "Accept Mail Offer" box. So there is hope that they may do some mailers... maybe...

I'll have to keep an eye on this mega-thread and see if they make more changes...

If you don't have it and really want it, I'd call them and say you got a mail offer but "lost" it. Haha it's worth a shot.

I am so glad that I've got mine, hopefully they only make it harder to apply, and not change the rewards categories or put low quarterly caps up. Wouldn't mind so much if they got rid of the $25 bonus for $100+, but I want my 5% bill pay!

Man that's a 25% bonus. i guess if they have to eliminate SOMETHING I'd be ok with that, but I'd really like to get it.

I think it's worth considering, particularly for any US Bank employees who might be reading this, how much ill will would be generated among customers and potential customers if they were to cut benefits on a card within a year of its product launch. It wouldn't be wise.

The smarter thing is to just pullback on marketing and be more selective about issuing new cards. After all, some of US Bank's competitors might be forced to pull up their benefits to compete.
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (Amazon.com, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

New rules

Postby Fred Fnord » Thu Dec 06, 2012 5:21 pm

My suspicion regarding the new rules is that they are indeed an attempt to slow down adoption. However, they don't seem to have changed their requirements as far as acceptance is concerned. I just went into a US Bank this morning and applied for a card, and was instantly approved, at a credit limit of about double the highest credit limit I have on any other card. And my credit history isn't long (3 years for my longest-held card, the others being 13 months, 9 months, and 2 months) or particularly impressive, although my last negative report was 6 years ago. Oh, also note that this was the first time I was instantly approved, and the first time I was approved without sending in proof of income.

Not sure if the extra 0.25% (well, actually, with the bonus it's 0.3125%) that you get from a gold checking account is worthwhile, in exchange for tying up $2500 in an account. The platinum account is actually a bit more tempting to me, since I have some money I need to find an investment plan for, but I'm not sure I want to do that through US Bank. Have to crunch some numbers when I get home.

It will definitely be nice to have some of the Visa Signature perks, too.
