Andrewket, how do you convert the usb gift cards to amazon credit? do you do it all on the amazon site or do you have to go buy an amazon gift card at a store and pay with the usb gift card?

Well...I called back and eventually was able to speak with someone and ask, with unfortunate news. Regular Cash Rewards with a 4.5k limit. Seriously? $500 short...I tried to recon for the Cash+, but she said that she couldn't do it. Most likely I will practice my recon skills as that was my first attempt ever and try again.

She suggested the same that everyone else has heard, use it for 6 months and then call to ask. I'm thinking about using it for a month and then calling and playing stupid. "So I just realized that this card isn't the cash+ that I originally applied for. I was really looking forward to the 5% bonus categories as I have other cards that give better than 1% on everything. Is there any way that you could upgrade me to the Cash+? If not, I'm afraid this card may not get very much use." Of course that could back fire and they might just offer to close the account...haha

Anyway, I guess I've at least gotten the ball rolling. Any tips for how to approach the cash+ upgrade request?

Amazon allows you to apply gift cards and maintain a credit balance on your account so you don't need to do it at time of purchase, and I don't end up with visa cards with $1.47 as you described. Btw, the banks call this concept breakage, and they factor this in to their costs/offers. They expect people to lose the cards, forget about them, leave some amount on them which gets eaten by the monthly service fees that they start charging typically after 12 months.

How do you convert them?

Just go on Amazon and buy a 25$ Amazon GC. Then apply the GC to your account(one of the options in "your account") and you will have a 25$ balance on your Amazon account that you can apply toward your next purchase. And by applying it to your account you don't have worry about losing the card/number.

Use it a lot PIF. Hard to go wrong that way. They gave me a 2k CLI about 2 months after I had the card. They do periodically review your credit and I would assume do things based on that.

After that, just ask. I would be willing to bet this is nothing more than temporary and you will get the Cash + card very soon. Just work with them it's worth it.

Are the real 5% categories the same ones they have for the demo?

I might consider it if they had groceries at 5%.

I"m planning on buying a computer from Apple in January. Is Apple considered an "electronic store?" I assume it would be - but you never know sometimes and I don't want to switch one of my categories for 3 months only to find out it's a specialty store or something. The ones listed on the 'pick your category' are Best Buy and American TV.
AMEX: Blue Cash Preferred (6% on groceries, 3% gas & dept stores)
Capital One: Venture (2 points per $1, equivalent to 2%)
Chase: Freedom (rotating 5% categories), Disney Rewards (1 point per $1, Disney benefits)
US Bank: Cash+ (5% bookstores / 5% Electronic Stores)

Keep in mind that you can get cash back on your purchases through rewards malls online. I get 5% back on purchases year round from Apple through shopdiscover. It becomes more lucrative this quarter because the rewards stack.
