I finally got ahold of customer service last night after numerous calls and holding nearly an hour in total yesterday. They directed me to their fraud prevention department who told me that the reason it was declined was they are seeing massive amounts of fraud for Experian credit reports and thus that is now flagged. He told me that I could now use the card there (I don't know what he did and didn't ask) and said it was to try to stem their losses from the ongoing fraud.

I told him I'd been trying unsuccessfully all day to reach the bank and could I just call that number again if I ever needed to report the card lost or stolen as it's a problem if I can't reach the bank and he said sure just call them direct. If anyone wants that number I will post it here for reference just let me know.

Jury is still out in my mind on this card we'll see. It's still in the back of my wallet I'm just not comfortable with it right now. Just have to see how it goes.

Selected reward categories - US Bank shows something different

Postby andrewket » Mon Aug 06, 2012 11:03 am

My first experience with this card did not go very well. I received the card last week and went online to pick my categories. I selected drug stores (2%), Airlines (5%), and Restaurants (5%). The website says it can take several days before the selections become active, and to return to the website to check.

This morning I went to check and it shows Drug Stores, Airlines, and ... bill pay. I called CS and the first rep looked and said that she saw drug stores, airlines, and 2nd category not selected. I thought, ok, clearly we have an error here - I picked one thing, the website is showing another, and the CS rep is showing yet a third. Unfortunately she couldn't do anything about it - said it was a new product, they're still learning the ins/outs, and suggested I talk to a supervisor.

Supervisor looked at it, and the story changed slightly. He said he was seeing the same thing as the website- drug stores, airlines, and bill pay. We went back and forth a bit, but the net result was that he too couldn't change it and had to forward a trouble case to a different office. However he basically told me that they won't be able to fix it either, and that I should just wait until the next quarter :( . Both CS representatives were very friendly, but they didn't resolve my issue. This sounds more like a restriction with US Bank's systems, not their lack of motivation. I will hear back from the other office by mail in 10 days.

The kicker is that I'm going on a vacation next week where I will be eating out every day. This was one of my motivations to get the card now, and select airlines and restaurants. The drugstore option I really don't care about, as I have other 2% on everything cards.

Not the best experience for a brand new customer to US Bank. I have no choice but to use one of my other cards during this trip.

A

I've been using the US Bank Cash Rewards card basically for a full week - trying to get the Cash+ card. But zero of my transactions have shown up online yet (not even in the 'pending' status). Does US Bank generally post transactions late? I have a Capital One card and a Chase card that both both show the transactions within 24 hours - sometimes even immediately.

*sigh*. I should really give up on this card & US Bank but it would save me so so so much on our utilities...
AMEX: Blue Cash Preferred (6% on groceries, 3% gas & dept stores)
Capital One: Venture (2 points per $1, equivalent to 2%)
Chase: Freedom (rotating 5% categories), Disney Rewards (1 point per $1, Disney benefits)
US Bank: Cash+ (5% bookstores / 5% Electronic Stores)

No, I see all of my transactions pretty quickly, usually within 24 hours. Sounds like something odd is going on you might want to give them a call.

Judging by his previous experience, have a good lengthy book handy before you do!

Hey, FB. I think you asked me above what my credit score is. I just saw that; sorry for late reply. On Credit Karma my score is 784, which I know is not the real thing. I've never had any late or missed payments, etc. The only negatives in my history are not having any other kind of debt except for CC (never a mortgage and last car loan paid off 10 years ago), relatively short credit history and number of inquiries.

As for the USB Cash+ card, I have had no problems so far. I'm not crazy about their website, especially the fact that it doesn't show pending transactions and it doesn't seem to confirm one's selections for cashback categories. My statement should cycle in the next few days and I'll see if rewards have been credited properly. It's early yet but so far I'm pretty happy.
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (Amazon.com, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

I'm not a big fan of the site either. Every so often at random intervals instead of your password it displays a question asking you one of your security questions. If you don't happen to notice that, and it's easy to overlook, you will lock yourself out of your account forcing you to call them to reset it. Setting up alerts is also a real pain as jeffysdad noted previously - you have ot view and agree to the terms for EVERY SINGLE alert. Doing it once isn't enough? It's just alerts, not you signing a mortgage!

And as you mentioned too, I do not believe there is something that tells you your rewards categories there either - it's a different site.

Having said that though, all these quibbles aside (and they are a nuisance) the card itself is pretty nice. US Bank also allows you to make payments on your account anytime you like - I've been able to make payments on consecutive days without an issue unlike many issuers these days (Discover, Chase, Cap One, etc) and they post in a timely manner. I find myself using this card for a lot of things these days so hpoefully the issues I had with it earlier when trying to contact customer service were just a temporary thing and not the norm.

MS99, since setting up my online access, I have yet to experience the security question issue at long-in that you describe. When I log in I enter user name, enter and go to another screen for password, but before I can enter password, my audio player opens and plays the sound associated with the security image I selected. I just wait a few seconds for the player to open, ctrl q to quit without listening and enter my password and I have no troubles. I'm on a Mac using a Firefox browser.

I'm using Windows Vista with Firefox. I never get that audio clip though. Interesting. Every now and then it does that, just like Discover will occasionally pop up the same thing when I log in. Must be different on different OSs or something.

Thanks for the response. I want to see how your experience is before I app for it. I want to save an inquiry if I don't need to waste one.
