How to maximize points during the gas station quarter?

Postby PopiLopi » Wed May 02, 2012 9:28 pm

I'm trying to figure out how to meet the $1500 cap on the Chase Freedom from July-September, the categories are gas and restaurants... I usually spend around $ 130 a month on gas, so that's $390, another $200 in restaurants (mostly buying lunch and random take-outs) , it makes it $600...

So I can spend close to $1000 in the quarter categories, but that leaves with another $500... Do you know if gas stations sell visa gift cards? I've done that this quarter in the grocery stores, but I've never seen visa cards in a gas station...
Amex: Business Platinum (09/12) BCP $10,500 (03/13)
Visa: Capital One Journey $750 (04/11) Chase Freedom $1,800 (04/12)
MasterCard Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select $8,500 (05/13)
Discover: Discover It $2500 (07/11)
Store Cards: Amazon $3900 (12/11) Macy's $500 (04/11) Kohl's $500 (05/12) Victoria's Secret $750 (11/12)

You should spend what you need. If gas is 130 per month and you prefer to use the restaurant for take out as opposed to a sit-down restaurant, you're going to come up short as you know.

I have seen grocery stores sell the Visa gift cards but I don't know if gas stations do. You know 1 thing if you have to be under the 1500 and don't forget that Visa has a service fee.

I would use the card for gas and go out to sit-down restaurants like Ruby Tuesdays, Fridays etc. Call each month and make sure what your slips match what Chase has.

I'll have to consider going to some restaurants, i just prefer homemade food and when we do go out for dinner my husband pays. I guess I can pay with my card ( thats gonna make him feel uncomfy ) ... I'm accumulating this freedom pts to use them as united miles, so $5 for a $500 visa gift card fee sounds like a great deal if I'll get 2.5k miles out of it
