Best rewards card for large jewelry purchase?

Postby elmsley4 » Mon Apr 02, 2012 4:41 pm

For a diamond ring and I want to maximize my rewards. The credit cards I own:

  • Chase Freedom ($7k limit);
  • Capital One Venture ($10k limit);
  • Citi ($15k);
  • Citi ($2k);
The ring is about $10k and I tried to get an increase on Capital One and was declined.

I have 750 credit score and good job. I was looking at applying for Chase's United MileagePlus, Chase Sapphire Preferred or Amex Gold. I'm leaning toward Chase Sapphire Preferred. I can't really justify $175 annual fee for AmEx.

Thoughts? Am I missing a card?

Best rewards for this would be a American Express or a Chase card. For some reason they partner with good places.

As far as a United, you can only redeem for united flights. You can't redeem for any gift cards for jewelry or anything else through United.

Just curious which capitol1 venture card do you have the blue or gold?

I have the gold and I'm not happy with it.

If you have not purchased it yet, you may try looking at direct financing. Typically they partner up with places like Citi, Chase or BoA for this.

If you really want a card, get an American Express it will diversify your current holdings a bit. Plan to get a credit card, not a charge card with AXP if you do not want to pay it off immediatly.

im not sure if you are purchasing the ring in a physical store but is a good website for rings. been looking into engagement rings myself. but amex and chase both partner with bluenile.

Amex you get 3x points per $1 spent
Chase Ultimate rewards you get 4x points per $1

so if you could get a CLI on your chase freedom and buy the ring on your freedom, thats $10,000 x 4 = 40,000 points = $400 cash back

will you be paying in full at the end of the month?
Wells Fargo Student Credit Card Visa - $1300 (February 2011)
American Express Zync Charge Card (February 2012)
Chase Freedom Visa- $2000 5% rotating (April 2012)
Citi Forward Visa- $3000 - 5x at restaurants, (April 2012)
Chase Sapphire Preferred Mastercard World Elite - $5000 (July 2012)

Credit cards left to attain

i would recommend amex for the best rewards.

as far as redemption goes on the united explorer, i just recently flew lufthansa as it is a codeshare flight with united. you need to call them up and ask about this... your miles are not just limited to united
