Do Costco or Sam's Club count as grocery stores?

Postby Parkway » Thu Jun 30, 2011 11:39 am

Do purchases at Costco and Sam's Club show up as grocery stores with the Blue Cash program? Or if they don't, what category do they fall to?

If they do, it would be wise to consider letting people know how much superior Blue Cash would be then compared to the Costco Amex.

thanks!

They are both characterized as "Warehouse stores" which means they will only get you the standard 1%.

The one way around it would be to find a grocery store that sells Walmart gift cards. The purchase will get you 6% cashback, and the Walmart cards can be used at Sam's.

For shopping at Costco, the AmEx Costco credit card rewards program will be superior to any other card. Why? Because it is the only card which gives 1% at Costco. All other American Express cards give 0.25% at wholesale stores such as Costco.

On the other hand for buying groceries outside of Costco, then the Blue Cash Preferred rewards program cannot be beaten, given its unlimited 6% cash back. There is no other card on the market which comes close to that.

Does that still hold true? I understand where they will not give the 6% for supermarkets at Costco. However, why would it not default down to the "1% for everywhere else"? I just took a glance at my Card Agreement and it does not mention anything about wholesale being 0.25% (althought I will admit it could be barried anywhere in there and I could have missed it.).

you are correct because costco isn't a grocery store they're a wholesale store.
