How Do I Use Multiple Cards to Maximize Rewards?

Postby theringoinfinite » Thu Jun 29, 2017 4:08 pm

Hi,

New here.

I've been using The Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express for years. I use it for everything.

Lately, I've been hearing some good things about the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

Does it make sense to get the Sapphire card?

If so, how does one manage using both cards? I'm in the habit of using just one.

Thanks!

Start reading! There are tons of threads around here about stuff like that.

Another great resource is The Points Guy website. I would start there with the articles and blog posts.

Good luck & YMMV!

The trick for me was really internalizing which purchases I'd use which card for, so that you don't even have to think about it or accidentally use the wrong card. You'd probably want to use your CSP for dining and travel (aside from Starwood bookings). And the Starwood card for Starwood stays. As for other purchases, you can just divide them among two cards or concentrate more on one card, depending what your immediate goals are.

Also become well acquainted with all the implications Starwood-Marriott merger. Marriott is a CSP transfer partner.
Cards:

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

It's taken me a while to maximize earning and I'm not even sure I'm doing it lol. I use the TPG app as a guide, it allows you to set custom values on point worth then uses that to make a recommendation on which card to use. There are no doubt other apps out there that do this...

You must really decide what you want to use your points for. Starpoints are (currently) some of the best out there for both hotel and airline transfer; this will likely change in the coming year as Marriot integrates.

Figure out what you top spending cats are and go from there.

You could get a Discover (or Freedom) card and only use it for 5% cats. Great value there but each only last a quarter...

URs to Marriott is possible...but not very efficient when OP can earn on SPG and transfer 1:3 from SPG to Marriott.
