IHG Platinum/Spire perks during stays

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Mon Jan 09, 2017 12:17 am

I spend like 8 nights per year in IHG properties. Usually, Platinum status just means 500 or 600 bonus points as a welcome amenity (worth about $4).

At one Crown Plaza, the free "Club" breakfast for Platinum and Spire members was pitiful by Holiday Inn "everyone eats free, even if most things are unhealthy" standards. I've not gotten any meaningful room upgrades, just higher floors and some very slightly larger rooms.

Recently, I did get my first nice Platinum perk at a Crown Plaza: a large hot breakfast for $10 that could have easily cost $30 elsewhere nearby.

People talk about the card's bonus, the renewal night, the 10% back, etc...and there was the "bonus counts towards elite" quirk that gave some Spire and 50k extra points.

Those are all great...but I'm curious to hear about any other benefits people have gotten from Platinum or Spire status that are more directly related to stays.
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

I'm still brand new to the IHG perks and hotel-perks game in general, but I do like what I've gotten at Crowne Plazas. The better views and slightly larger rooms are nice when I'm traveling with my husband, and we did make a lot of use out of the rather nice lounge at the last one we stayed at. It was very well stocked with a decent continental breakfast and snacks throughout the day. Raiding the cookies and fruit was extra nice at 2am after a long night out. :)

But, then again, I am used to getting nothing "extra" at hotels, so these things are meaningful to me. This will likely change.

One thing that did crack me up was that one of the "welcome" gifts I was offered was 2 free drinks at the bar. Beer and house wine only.
Cards:

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

I guess the tradeoff is that when status is easy to get, what it provides will be fairly inconsistent.

A few places offer alcoholic drinks (others just offer water), but I usually take the points.
