Citi AAdvantage Platinum Bonus

Postby JustRewards » Mon Oct 10, 2016 3:58 pm

I recently got a Citi AAdvantage Platinum offer in the mail that I was considering. However, I remember something about Citi not honoring bonus deals if you'v had their card in the recent past. I had gotten the AAdvantage Platinum back in 2011 and then called to cancel before the annual fee hit the next year. The CSR down-sold me to a Bronze AAdvantage at the time, which only earns 1 mile/$2 in spend. I still have this card in my sock drawer and use it occasionally to reset the clock on my AAdvantage frequent flyer account to keep my miles from expiring. So, given the fact that I have this Bronze card would I be eligible for a new Platinum signup bonus or am I SOL?

A PC away from a card counts as a closure for bonus purposes (so I've heard), and your last Citi AAdvantage open/close activity (the PC) was in 2012 (give or take a month).

You're out of the 24 month "card family window", so you should be eligible for the bonus

If I understand the rules correctly (I've had a glass of wine, and always check on FT when in doubt) it is important that you DO NOT close the Bronze card (at least until you have gotten the AA Platinum bonus). If you close Bronze too early, you might be ineligible for the Platinum bonus.

Really not sure what I'll add next or when

That's interesting. Why would closing it affect the bonus? Open / close activity in general?

"American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have had any Citi / AAdvantage card (other than a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage card) opened or closed in the past 24 months. "

The loophole, apparently, is that you can have a card that's been open for more than 24 months, apply for a new card and get the bonus, then close/PC the old card.

Great information - thanks everyone. Now I wonder if I take the Platinum offer and cancel again before the annual fee hits if Citi will blacklist me. Hopefully since it's been several years since my initial closure I will be ok.
