Is the AmEx SPG card worth keeping?

Postby JustRewards » Fri Sep 23, 2016 10:22 am

I added the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest card to my lineup last year to take advantage of a limited time signup bonus offer of 30,000 points. However, since the Marriott merger got announced I'm considering closing the account as I already have the Chase Marriott card and because the annual fee is getting ready to bill. I can justify keeping the Marriott card since I get a free hotel night each year but I don't see the long term benefit of the SPG card beyond it's points transfer feature. Thoughts?

I never really saw the appeal of the card past the first year for anything other than raw earning power on 1x categories or the little boost in earning elite status.

And faster internet, I guess. I generally don't use hotel wifi.
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking too. It's a cool looking card and I definitely enjoyed the signup bonus but it doesn't seem to have any long term value. Thanks.

Marriott is letting you link your accounts (Marriott, Ritz Carlton, Starwood) and whatever status you have that is the highest, that's what your status will be. Today I linked my Starwood account (had gold status due to my American Express Platinum card even though I have never stayed in a Starwood) to my Marriott rewards account which was silver, now Marriott is Gold Elite
Discover it $3.5K
BOA CR Visa Sig. $25K
Chase Freedom Visa $2K
Chase MRP Visa Sig. $5K
Cap 1 Vent Visa Sig. $13K
Citi HH Visa Sig. $10.1K
AMEX Plat NPSL
AMEX BCP $20K
AMEX Gold Delta SM $8K
BC AR + WEMC $3.5K
Cap 1 Spark Cash Bus Visa Sig. $4k
Chase Ink Cash Busin Visa Sig. $5K

That's pretty good. I have the Platinum and Ritz so 2/3 gold already but the Ritz is only for the first year, though I will probably spend the 10K on there easily to maintain it.

I wonder how all this will shake out going forward and what will happen to the cards and rewards programs.
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

I'm not sure what you mean by this.
