Bank/brokerage promo thread

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Wed Sep 14, 2016 5:07 pm

We should have a thread for bank/brokerage promos...a sort of garden club for people who still like to take money from banks.

No one has to say at which level (dollar threshold) they are participating.

I'm currently in:
Discover savings. Fixed $100 promo. I don't recall all the details. 0.95% APR, which isn't bad.
e*trade. $200 for $25k up to $2,500 for $1M. 6 months commitment. Old accounts welcome.
TD Ameritrade. $150 for $50k up to $2,000 for $1M. 12 month commitment. Old accounts welcome.
Fidelity. AA/Delta/United miles. 15k for $25k up to 50k for $100k. 9 month commitment. Old accounts welcome.
Schwab Platinum Amex. AF reduction. No time commitment, but the money need to be in the account on some date around the card's anniversary.
Citi checking. $400 for $15k. 1 month commitment. New accounts.

Keep in mind that most of these places pay very little interest on cash/money market accounts, so the promos may be better-suited to stocks and bonds. Also, transfers can take a while, so these aren't for securities you might want to trade a lot.

I received a direct mail credit card offer from Fidelity. You earn 2% cash back on all purchases. I think you can put the cash back straight to your brokerage account.

That's a well-known credit card, and a decent one for many people, but you have to spend money and open a new CC to get the 2%. This thread should be more about earning extra rewards without opening new credit card accounts or spending a lot of money.

It's easy to spend $10,000 and earn $200 in rewards. The higher art (and the ideal of this thread) is earning $200 and keeping the $10,000.

Good topic. Chase was/is running a promo on new checking and savings accounts. You could get up to $500 by opening up various combinations of accounts, maintaining minimum balances and setting the checking account up for direct deposit. However, I think the current promo may have just expired.

I've seen those promos, and they are attractive. Chase has been my primary checking account for a while and they have several branches near me. I have a lot of bills tied to that checking account, so switching would take some time and effort. Chase may have me as a bit of a captive customer, but I don't keep much in the account and get good value from Chase CCs. I have checking accounts with Schwab and Citi, and might consider Discover checking. I don't see Citi checking as a likely long-term account.

Ive definitely the option to leave and return to Chase to open a new account, though I'm not sure it's worth the effort. It might be more appealing to someone new to Chase.

BofA Targeted: After my wife opened her BBR we got a $100 offer for a checking account. Must have 2 direct deposits of $250+ each within 90 days of opening.

Haven't taken advantage of that yet, but it's good through 12/31/16. We may have run into some trouble in trying to open the savings account for BBR redemption. The account has been opened but they wouldn't fund with the transfer I initiated based off of something from Early Warning, which is apparently some kind of consumer reporting agency I'd never heard of that is partly owned by BofA. That was about a week ago - I need to try to contact BofA and see if I can get this Early Warning consumer report because I have no idea what would be preventing that from going through (it would help if both numbers they gave us weren't only operational during normal business hours).

Got that targeted offer before trying to open the savings account. Presumably it was because of the new BBR card. If we attempt to get the checking account bonus I'll definitely be closing after I get that $100!

Merrill Lynch rollover 401K to them or open new brokerage account, depending on balances, get up to $600

Trying to learn a little about MS to turn my TD Ameritrade-derived Metabank Visa reward/debit cards into cash.

If I can't figure out a way, I guess I can just use them at Costco.

I'm a Chase card customer, the $500 promo is still active, at least for existing customers, until Nov 15. $300 for opening checking account with direct deposit, $200 for opening savings with 15,000 balance.

You mean an existing Chase credit card customer without a Chase savings account can earn $200? Or an existing Chase savings customer can open a second savings account and earn $200?
