Approved for Chase Sapphire Reserve and Preferred...

Postby Silvervox325 » Thu Sep 08, 2016 5:59 pm

So, I'm dumb.

I have a good credit score, but my fiancee's is FANTASTIC, so I was encouraging her to apply for the Reserve so we could get those tasty signup bonuses (we've got a honeymoon coming up). Just as she was about to do so, Chase pulled the card offers for a day or two. I, in my infinite wisdom, figured they were surprised by the number of applicants and were going to nerf the rewards, so I decided to go ahead and apply for the Preferred, since I was kinda leery about the Reserve's annual fee anyway.

Shortly after that, the Reserve came back, and she applied for it without knowing that I had just applied for the Preferred. We both got the cards, and now we need to spend 8k between the two if we want the full signup bonuses. We can probably meet the Reserve's minimum spend without too much trouble, but getting both is going to be difficult.

Are there any bills you don't usually pay by CC that you can pay by CC for a small fee? Rent...mortgage...car payments...utilities?

Depending on how close you are to bridging that gap, maybe gift cards toward the end would let you hit the bonuses? GCs to frequent supermarkets, restaurants, etc. could let you effectively stretch out that intro period without spending money unnecessarily (over time). You could get prepaid Amex/Visa/MC cards, too. There would be a fee, but like CarefulBuilder's suggestion it would be worth if it means the difference between a big fat bonus and nothing.

We're looking into it now, but I think we're gonna have to prioritize the CSR over the CSP.

On V/MC/Amex gift cards, there will generally be fees...but some merchants don't even allow customers to buy them with anything other than cash or debit.

Even if merchants allow it, Chase may not like it. Inefficient MS is still MS.

I'd suggest supermarket/restaurant/warehouse club/Amazon gift cards, if you're going to go the gift card route.

If you have any friends or family that you trust and are making any big purchases, you could ask if you could put it on your card and they pay you back via cash or check.

Maybe you could put some wedding realted expenses on your cards. Perhaps, there are some deposists for venues or services that you can put on the cards.

This thread is a few months old. OP's minimum spend window has closed by now...
