Award travel for other people

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Wed Aug 17, 2016 2:05 pm

When I've redeemed points and miles for hotel rooms and flights, I've been alone or with other people. I've never redeemed points or miles purely for another person's use.

I know program terms don't allow me to sell the points to another person...but which programs don't require the member to be present?
Love: IHG, Platinum, Sallie Mae, AA Plat, CSP
Like: Discover, ED, BCE, Hyatt, Arrival, Freedom
Might drop: BrooksBros, Prestige (Costco PC?)
Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

What do you mean by present? Like at the hotel when they check in? Or???

I've bought airline tickets with points for other people with no issue or complication or anything...
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

I'm asking if major award programs (especially IHG/Hyatt/Delta/AA/United) would allow the following:
1. I use miles to book a round-trip award flight for someone to visit me. I don't buy a ticket for myself, so I don't check in at the airport or get on a plane.
2. I use points for someone's hotel stay while I'm in a different state. I never set foot in the hotel.

When you say you've bought award airline tickets for other people...were you required to be flying that same day, or help the other person check in at the airport or anything like that?

As far as I know none of those things should be a problem at all. If they let you book the ticke in someone else's name, you don't have to be there for the travel. Same with a hotel room. I'm pretty sure I've stayed in IHGs on someone else's points without them there but not 100%.

I bought a plane ticket for my brother and his fiancé a few months ago with MR. International flights. I had nothing to do with it after the purchase. I put their names in as spelled on their passports and forwarded them the confirmation.

I'm pretty sure he's scheduled hotel stays for me and others at Holiday Inn's when he wasn't staying there at all. You have to tell the hotel who's staying etc but it should be ok. The hotel may be more complicated because when you book the room it's less official than buying a plane ticket and the people running the front desk tend to be less organized and aware than anyone working at an airline.
