Hyatt and IHG come to mind.

When someone travels a lot, though, AFs are often not a big deal.

Agreed - I travel for work and have easily made back the annual fees for my Marriott, PRG and CSP.

Example in June I racked up 12k+ UR points from hotel, food and uber which covers the $95 annual fee and still leaves $25 to spare.

Toss AMEX offers into the mix such as $40 cash back for stays at Hilton etc and it gets better.
Discover IT $16.9K | CSP $6.5K | Freedom $11K | CSR $24K | AMEX BCE $20K | AMEX Everyday $12.9K
BOA Travel Rewards - $2.7K | Chase Marriott Premier - $6K | AMEX Premier Gold

Wyndham is an option for fairly basic hotels. A $69 AF (not waived) and $1k spend gets three award nights with minimal blackout dates/properties. They're generally not high-end, but 3 nights for $69 is hard to beat in generally expensive areas.

I've stopped trying to do highly precise award math. I have so many earning and redemption options that I don't see much value in trying to be precise. When the input involves subjectivity, no formula can give a precise and meaningful output. I just use points when they offer what is obviously at least a decent value, and I'll drop AF cards as their value prospect diminishes.

My cards are nearly all cashback, with the exception of my Orbitz Visa, which has 5% back on Orbitz and 2% everywhere else, and is as good as cash, but the currency can only be redeemed on prepaid hotel bookings on Orbitz. I redeem my Citi Double Cash to my bank account, and Discover's mostly with gift cards (the $5 extra adds up). Everything else is taken as statement credit.
