Best Western status match

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Thu May 05, 2016 5:39 pm

For any BW rewards members, there's a modest-but-easy status match going on. Platinum with IHG and Hyatt got me BW Diamond.

30% more points (even if they may all eventually end up at AA), maybe a modest upgrade, and snacks on arrival.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May

No kidding? I get Platinum with both thru my CC's.

The status match offer has been there for years. My expectations as to what it will actually mean are pretty low. But since I'll be at a BW, anyway, I figured I'd give it a try.

There seems to be a bit of variability in how BW matches competitor status. Your wife's IHG Spire might be worth trying, and might even get 50% more points as "Diamond Select". Programs with a high nominal night/stay requirement seem to do well. Hilton Gold alone doesn't seem to do much.

Free breakfast (like the Hyatt Diamond perk) is not an elite perk with BW. Some BW properties are reported to have an excellent breakfast that everyone gets, and others don't even feed elites. Fortunately, I'll be at one of the former.

No upgrade...though it would have to be to a suite, and those are excluded. Welcome amenity is a small bag of oreos.

But lots of points and 4th night free via Prestige. :)

Would Hhonors platinum qualify for this match? Or anywhere else for that matter? Staying in an area with no Hilton hotels this weekend, so this post was very apropos.

You have nothing to lose but a few minutes. You'd probably get BW Diamond like I did.

BW property quality varies a lot. Having no status at a nice place can be a lot better than having high status at a bad one. My room is a little more out of the way and therefore quieter, so maybe that's a sort of upgrade, but apart from that status only means snacks and more points. Here, everyone gets breakfast and gym/pool access, regardless of status.

So know the details of the properties you're considering and don't expect status to mean much.

Hyatt does frequent status matches but I don't know what's going on there right now.

I cannot see staying in a Best Western even if you paid me to do it, but to each his own.

Others in the group did say it was much nicer than other BWs...

But if you're unwilling to go to any place where the best hotel/motel is a (premium) BW, then there's a lot of the world you'll never see. There are some beautiful parts of America that don't get a lot of tourist traffic. Sometimes quiet is a good thing.

Don't get suckered in by prestigious brands, or driven away by humble ones. That BW was a heck of a lot nicer than a Category 8 (of 9) Marriott I went to last year where management didn't give a #@^& about the no-smoking policy.

I've seen all 50 states, and some neat backroads towns, but I will never stay in a Best Western motel to do so. Yuck. But enjoy it!

Not trashy enough, I guess.

Bobs by the hour motel is good enough!
