Should I cancel my Jetblue Amex and reapply for Barclays MC?

Postby dave4242 » Thu Jan 21, 2016 1:14 pm

Hello, I have a Jetblue Amex. The relationship between Jetblue and Amex is set to expire March 21, 2016. The card will then become a Barclays Mastercard affliated with Jetblue. If I were to cancel my Amex now, would I be able to sign up for Barclays MC and get whatever signon bonus they may offer?

I would say sign up now if you will be able to meet the sign-up bonus. Upon approval for the Barclays MC, I would cancel the Amex to avoid the card from converting to a different product (either from Amex or Barclay). Letting the card convert could prevent you from getting a sign-up bonus, so it is wise of you to close it.
American Express: Blue Cash Everyday (10k), Everyday, ; Discover It (7.3k) ; Target (2.1k)

Citi: Diamond (2k) ; Bank of America: Cash Rewards (2.6k) ; Capital One: Quicksilver (3k) , Sony ; Chase: Freedom (3.7k), Slate (3k), (Amazon) ; Barclay Ring ; Synchrony: Walmart MC, Amazon, Ebates

We received a letter saying it would convert from Amex to Barclays JetBlue MC. I wasn't sure whether it being tied to my JetBlue frequent flyer number it might prevent me from canceling Amex and joining Barclays MC. So you think I should cancel?

I'm assuming you want to apply for the Arrival World MasterCard. As long as you open that new account, you will be eligible for the sign-up bonus. I am not sure if the JetBlue sponsored card is replacing the Arrival or if it is going to be part of the lineup alongside the Arrival. Since you don't seem interested in receiving a JetBlue MasterCard, it would be best to cancel the Amex before the annual fee is charged. Since your flyer program can exist without your credit card, you should be fine cancelling the Amex card.

No. I do want the Barclays JetBlue card, but I'd also like the sign up bonus. That is why I am considering canceling the Amex before it converts to Barclays JetBlue in March and apply when it comes out.

I don't see why it would. It certainly wouldn't prevent you from cancelling the AmEx.
