Gotta Love Amex Offers

Postby CardAttack » Sat Dec 05, 2015 7:18 pm

I get a ton of money back from Amex Offers and a little bit from BankAmeriDeals as well.

Yesterday, I loaded an offer to get $5 back for spending $5 inside QuikTrip to both my Amex accounts. And each offer can be used twice! So I picked up some fresh fruit and cheese snacks today for $5.33, thus getting them for effectively 33 cents.

I usually find an offer I like at least once a week.

I rarely use the bank of America deals, but the amex offers on both of my amex cards are great. I recently added the quick trip one as well.

I'm kind of "meh" about amex offers. Don't get me wrong it is great that they offer them and I'd much rather have them than not have them, but I've only actually gotten use out of them like twice. I dunno - to me it feels like all it ends up doing is tempting you to spend somewhere you may not normally be spending at that moment. For example, I like Godiva chocolate and I have an amex offer for it right now. But do I really need to spend money on Godiva chocolate? No, but your brain says "well I shop/like it there anyway!" so you end up using the offer (and spending more than originally planned). It's just important to be careful with the offers and stick to pre-planned purchases IMO.

I will say it's nice that amex, and even BOA with amerideals and Citi with the new "smart savings", at least provides extra incentives on top of the everyday rewards.

Agree. I only use offers I would use anyway (like the recent Amazon offer) or ones where I can get things like groceries or pantry items . But the free snack from QT (which I get gas from anyway) is kinda nice. I also used the Boxed one recently. They have some great prices on groceries for stuff I use.

I haven't used Boxed yet, but I think they have a lot of promo codes floating around that can be combined with Amex offers.

Yes, there are usually promo codes floating around (or on the seller's website itself). Of course, many of the these offers can be used through rebate portals (i.e. The recent Amex offer for walmart.com). Boxed also gave me a 10% discount on my next order; so hopefully another Amex offer will come through with them again).

The recent mobil/exxon offer is a good one.

I also have one for a local restaurant I can combine with Open Table, and iDine!

It's much more rare for me though I've recently used the $10 off $75 cell phone bill offer (and will use it one more time) as well as a couple of the $15 off $60 with Amazon offers. Will probably use a couple of the $10 off $30 with Exxon/Mobil offers as well.

Thanks for speaking for us but I only use offers on purchases I'd make anyway. Don't conflate "you" and "I".

I was talking about about what can tend to happen if one isn't careful, not saying it's a universal truth. Amex hopes that one decides that "well I shop there sometimes, so I need to use this offer!" whether they actually need something right now or not.

I haven't received many good offers. They generally require more spend than I would normally do, so it lessens the appeal. But I have totally said "ohh newegg, I will probably order something from there." Now I'm searching newegg for something to buy... No purchases yet, but I can see a new vacuum in the future.

Most of the offers I've gotten are also too high of a spend requirement for me. I appreciate Amex giving offers; I just wish they would analyze where you spend and how much you spend and tailor the offers a bit more (since we all know they have this data anyway).
