Discover Rewards - Are they honest?

Postby plaidington » Wed Nov 11, 2015 2:08 pm

Hi there,

I mainly use a Barclays Travel Reward card and whenever i use it, it will automatically show my earned miles. It is always spot on. With Discover, however, I noticed that I don't always get rewards I think I should be getting. Mind you I am a banker for a living and I have pretty awesome math skills.

For instance, last year I followed a link thru Discover to Best Buy and bought some merch and never received the bonus cash back promised by the link.

I started to use the card again recently as I have a lot of Xmas shopping to do at Amazon.com and clothing stores and as I am buying stuff - the rewards do not appear to be adding up to 5%.

What are your experiences w/ Discover rewards -cash back?

I would say the easiest thing to do here would be to call Discover customer service and tell them specifically where you think things don't add up. There is always some form of delay with the rewards, but that obviously doesn't mean it should be wrong and you should also easily be able to figure it out, math skills or not.

Give them a call and see what they say. It could also have to do with the way the individual merchants have themselves coded with their credit card processors.
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

I second Tubpbs.

Discover doesn't post rewards instantly like Barclay or Capital One, but I have never had a problem getting what I should. I check when I get every statement to make sure it works out right. The Discover Deals do take longer, though. If your issue is specifically with something you went through on Discover Deals, I would say it will probably show up later even if a statement has already cut since.

Either way, give them a call and explain what you believe you are missing - I'm sure they can help you out.

Discover Deals, like the Chase UR portal purchases generally don't get credited to your account until after the return period. With Chase I always get an email telling me how many extra points I got.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

Thanks for the great feedback, i will be patient and see if the rewards materialize - if not i will contact discover and ask them what is happening.

Keep an eye on them (I'd advise this for any rewards program -- not just Discover) and definitely call if it doesn't seem to add up.

There have been a couple times where ive had to contact them about not getting rewards when shopping through the discover portal. Also never received the $75 Amazon giftcard promised as a signup bonus. They claimed they sent it, but ended up giving me a $50 statement credit instead.

I don't know if this makes a difference or not because I have the student version, but for me when I use the card for one of there 5%10%15% cash back bonus's It specifically shows the "promotional" cash back I got, and the "everywhere else" cash back. Ive never had a problem with it so far, like they say, it takes 4-6 weeks. Idk if that helps but hopefully you get it all figured out.

Had to SM then about missing rewards - got a reply shortly after saying the missing amount will be added to next statement.

I find it very helpful to make a list of purchases that I make through Discover Deals, that way I can easily follow up with them about missing CB.
CSR $24K | Discover IT $22.9K | AMEX BCE $15K | AMEX EveryDay $12.9K | Marriott Premier - $11K | Delta Platinum $10K | Freedom $6.5K | Freedom $6K | BOA Travel Rewards - $2.7K | AMEX Premier Gold

Remember that Discover's usual rewards don't post until the statement closes, and the Discover Deals bonus cashback can take up to 8 weeks (2 statements) to properly show. But yes, you can certainly call.
