Renewal Bonus > AF Card List

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Wed Aug 26, 2015 9:07 pm

I feel pretty much set with my current cards. EDP, CSP, and Freedom will get most of my spending until the rewards are heavily nerfed. Any new cards would mostly be for bonuses or temporary use.

I wouldn't mind another card that gave a nice renewal bonus that could offset most or all of the annual fee - without the need for a lot of spending.

Chase IHG, Hyatt, and Marriott come with annual free rooms. US Bank Club Carlson and Barclaycard Wyndham have renewal points. Barclaycard's old US Airways card (I think) gave 10k miles.

My Brooks Bros card gives a $20 GC and no-AF Amex cards can get offers, but I'm talking about bonuses worth more than, say, $100.

So what other cards are there?

If I recall correctly isn't the bonuses with the Wyndham card worth more than $100? Of course finding a Wyndham is next to impossible.
Kohls: $300, Discover IT: $1.8k, Capital One Quicksilver: $2k, Amazon Store Card: $2.2k, BoA Cash Rewards: 1k, Chase Freedom: 3.2k, AMEX HHonors 3k

The Wyndham Rewards program has changed a lot in 2015. In a special promotion, Barclaycard was offering - from around June to mid-August - a card with a good-to-great signup bonus and a good renewal bonus (15k vs. 6k). If I stayed at those hotels, I would definitely want those promotional card terms. The promotion has, however, ended. The card is back to it's old, boring terms.

It's currently a mediocre program for people who like high-cost areas or who stay enough to use the Go Fast offers. For occasional stays at low-cost properties, it's an awful deal. That's because a $60 property and a (nominally) $300 room both cost 15k points.

Of course, I have to question who would pay $300 for even a nice Wyndham. I don't think I would, given the abundance of Holiday Inns.

*Corrected - I previously said the card was nerfed. The better "old" terms were just a temporary promo.*

Damn! TPG did a nice write-up praising the card last month I think. Such a shame they nerfed it. I agree that I would take Holiday Inn over Wyndham especially at the $300 price point. Plus lack of properties is a big problem with Wyndham as well. I can't count on one hand how Wyndham properties I've seen in my travels.

They don't have a lot of properties, and their better brands may be good but I'd rather avoid a Super 8 or Knights Inn. I'm very happy to have IHG instead.

I corrected my old post. TPG was writing about the special promo that has now ended. The current terms are the standard, unexciting ones. So it wasn't a nerf, strictly speaking.

Yeah Super 8 is somewhere I'd never stay at let alone use points for. I can't wait to get the IHG card....eventually.
