Confusion concerning rewards program

Postby Whatamuji » Mon Aug 10, 2015 7:04 pm

I'm considering meeting some of my sign up bonus by buying gift cards. However looking through the cardmember agreement I'm a little confused as to what is considered an ineligible purchase. Ineligible purchases on the list I'm most concerned about include " purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of any cash equivalents." Is this saying that I won't earn points if I go to a fast food place and purchase gift cards, or purchase amazon cards online, etc?

An example of an ineligible purchase would be loading an Amex Serve or Chase Liquid, or Buying gift cards direct from the gift card issuer, ie Amex gift cards straight from amex. If you purchase gift cards from say WalMart or a grocery store, that is acceptable.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

If the card is a reloadable gift card, is that fair game as well?

I've bought Costco Cash with a Chase card, and electronic Amazon gift cards from Amazon with most of my cards without the slightest problem. I earn rewards on all that.

I've not dabbled in prepaid major network cards, so I can't give advice there, other than to make sure you know store policies.

You may encounter a problem like:
1. The grocery store won't let you pay with a CC for the gift card.
2. There will be activation fees.
3. The card issuer may take adverse action.

You won't be able to. Prepaid debit cards are a way to move cash and get it back.

ALso, most places will deny your CC when you try to pay for the prepaid debit card. Every once in a while, you can find a new employee who doesn't know the rules and ttthey will let you do it. But, don't count on that.

I don't know if other fast food places do this but where I work we have a gift card (clearly called gift card) however it's reloadable and money can be charged to it with a credit card. I was thinking I might use that as my means since I'm always eating there when I get off work. Think that'll work?

If you're talking about a re-loadable card that isn't a Visa/Amex/MC/Disc, and can only be used at one store, then you're probably okay.

Yup it can only be used at my restaurant. I'll try a small amount and see if it goes through and earns me points. If not, then there's always Amazon or Steam.

Yea, I'm with CB. As long as it's just for that company, you should be fine.

Either way, I'd personally make it a little more discreet by not ONLY buying the gift card in the transaction. Couldn't you buy some random menu item and have them ring up the gift cards with it? So that your total is like $207.92 or something instead of an even $200. Then they probably wouldn't really know either way and would just assume you picked up a regular tab.
