What is best offer for $3.22K purchase?

Postby solomon » Mon Jun 15, 2015 5:59 pm

I am making a $3.22K purchase and I wanted to know what was the best offer credit card for this transaction?

Please feel free to leave an opinion or suggest another card.

My options:

A. Chase Freedom - $200 Cash Back for using $500
B. Chase Sapphire Preferred - 40K + 5K Points for $4K within 3 months
C. Citi Prestige - 50K Points + $250 Airfare for $3K purchase in 3 months
D. Amex Gold Delta Skymiles - 50K Bonus miles + $50 statment credit after $2K purchase in 3 months.
E. Capital One Venture - 40K points but I don't know the terms.

Here is a breakdown of how much points are worth: http://thepointsguy.com/2015/03/what-ar ... aluations/

Well a combo of Freedom CSP could get you some nice travel rewards, but requires some extra spending. Still it could turn into $720 worth of travel.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

Can I sign up for both at once and would it hurt my credit score because there is two credit inquires?

As with any matter of best it's subjective. You need to take a look at the rewards programs and ensure that you can maximize point value for a given program versus relying on a web site's determination of point value. Value will depend on how you specifically redeem the points.

It's not just a matter of the inquiries but the hit to AAoA. However, you also have to consider the other factors that would impact your score such as the change to your utilization. We can't tell you the impact to you in terms of points. It depends on your credit profile and how those changes all add up for you.

I'd avoid anything hotel or airline-specific unless you expect to use the points/miles well.

You've mostly listed travel cards, but have given no indication of what your travel habits and spending are.
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

Good point. I think I am going with the Chase Freedom with 0% APR for 15 months and $200 cash back.

Guaranteed money. FTW.

Do you plan to keep the new card? Or you'd be open to getting an AF card with a nice bonus (AF waived the first year or not) and then closing it at the end of the fist year?

If you do just want to do a little bonus-hunting, Arrival Plus might be an option to consider. A $3.22k purchase is a good opportunity to earn (or mostly earn for CSP) a good signup bonus.

I like using Freedom - for 5% stuff. For a large transaction, there are better bonuses.

I will consider the Arrival Plus card and the CSP.

I just understand you have to always use the card to get the points. But, you can't beat the 15 month 0% interest.

To accumulate points efficiently a CSP would have to be my main card.
