Chase Freedom vs Discover It

Postby JackLane » Tue Mar 10, 2015 3:45 pm

I already have a Chase Freedom, and was considering Discover It for no foreign transaction fee.

So does it make sense for me to get Discover It card as well? I don't travel internationally a lot, but when I travel, the fees really add up.

I assume, cashback wise, it should be same for both, right?

Thanks in advance.
Chase Freedom 04/2012. $6500 | Costco Citi 10/2012 $8100 | AmEx BlueCash 06/2015, $15000 |Discover It 07/2015, $5200 |Amazon Store Prime 01/2016 $2200

I have both. Sometimes the 5% is different, sometimes it's not but I certainly dont regret any of them.

For domestic purchases, I find both useful.

Discover has no FTF, but there will be some places that won't take it.

If you travel a lot internationally and want to avoid annual fees and FTFs, I'd look at an Arrival.
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

Do I get the Chase Freedom or the Discover It? Should I drink the Jägermeister or the Red Bull? How 'bout both!

It used to be that the Freedom and It had overlapping 5% cats half the year(and almost always gas in the summer), but it seems like they are diverging in their quarterly cats as the years go by. Yes, Discover is FTF free, but depending on where you go... the Discover could be useless. I go to Canada rather frequently and Discover acceptance is very spotty there.
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

Your call to make. Some both find useful. Some find one of them to be redundant. I find both useful but YMMV.

If no FTF is your primary reason you might want to look into acceptance where you intend to travel.

I agree -- if FTF is the consideration, be careful; Discover won't be accepted everywhere anyway.

For domestic purchases, I personally find having both redundant. The categories are basically the same during the year. No they don't typically overlap much anymore, but they tend to be extremely similar, and the rewards the same (other than if you have a CSP and are leveraging your Freedom points that way). But for a pure cash back perspective I prefer the Discover; to me the categories are more broad -- typically "home improvement stores" vs just Lowe's etc. Less restrictive

Chase Freedom might have a slight edge since the cash back can be converted to UR points.

I applied for a Chase Freedom and a Discover IT nearly the same time (I believe the Discover first) and was declined for the Discover, and approved for the Freedom. Just a tid bit of information to ponder.

Others mentioned acceptance, just make sure you look into it before you go somewhere. It is a great perk but if the no FTFs is the primary reason, other options may be better.

That said, I am very pleased with my Discover and the broader categories tipped my decision to them when I was looking at the it and Freedom ("home improvement stores" and "online shopping" vs. Lowe's and Amazon). The free FICO score is a great feature if you aren't already getting it somewhere else. Personally, I've been able to make good use of Discover Deals but that will vary from person to person. Finally, you can redeem cash back for any amount with Discover, if that matters to you.

My Cards: Barclay Arrival+ | Discover it | Amex ED
AU:: Discover Miles | BofA BBR | Barclay Commence (SD'd)
