Overlapping happens. It's just something 5% cards do at times. I'd rather have more options than fewer.

While I don't need multiple 5% gas or movies cards, for online shopping or home improvement I expect a fair number of people could spend over $1,500 in a quarter.

The Discover Deals partners are also not exactly the same as the Shop through Chase ones.

I miss my supercharged Discover and Freedom.

I used to get 5.5% in URs with Freedom on Groceries. Now I only get 5% cash with Sallie Mae, and Barclaycard says I'm not eligible for any extra cash back.

I've also had a bit of miscellaneous spending, so the extra 5% on Discover ($10 for $200 spend) only took a few days.

I'll certainly try to get some extra MRs or an AF waiver on PRG in a month.

That's the first time I have seen anyone say "only" 5% and especially with the beloved Sallie that is almost never faulted. 5% is still a very good return for doing nothing other than spending money you'd spend anyway.

I have both and love them. Last quarter they had different categories now they are both restaurant. Discover offer more cash back with shop Discover than Chase. I did get Chase before Christmas and go a $200 signing bonus. You can also get Discover It Miles.
American Express $22,500
Capital One $6500
Chase $2500
CU Card $1000
Discover$2550

Having both is not necessarily a bad thing. The only person that can tell you if it will "make sense", is you. Personally, I keep a variety of cards for different reasons.
Main Cards:
Amex BCE
Amex Everyday
Bank of America Cash Rewards
Chase Freedom
Capital One Quicksilver
Citi Thank You Preferred

Spark Cash Back (Business), Amex Plum (Business)
