Good news! I just tested my new SallieMae at both Save-A-Lot and Walmart. Both received the 5% cash back reward points. Neither store would earn the 6% with BCP. In the case of Walmart it is coded as a non-qualifiying superstore and in the case of Save-A-Lot they don't accept AmEx. This makes the SM a whole lot more useful as a grocery card in my area.

Sorry for the confusion - yeah, I just meant use the card next time you make a purchase to find out for sure.

That really surprises me that Walmart qualifies for groceries (on every other card I have heard about it is coded as something else)! I was considering applying for a SM myself in April just for the year-round gas, but if Walmart also qualifies for 5% I should definitely go for one.

I just completed several test purchases with my SM MC to determine where I would earn the 5% cash back. Here are the points received per dollar spent:
  • Walmart 5
  • Save-A-Lot 5
  • Amazon.com 5
  • Sams Club 1
  • Country Club Produce 1
While I was very happy about Walmart, Save-A-Lot, and Amazon, I was a bit disappointed about Sams Club and Country Club Produce although not overly surprised. None of these would be considered grocery stores with BCP.

Thanks for posting your findings. That is disappointing, especially that they would let Walmart qualify but not Sam's Club. I do a good deal of grocery shopping at Walmart, though, so this card just jumped up from "on my radar" to "definitely planning on getting."

I've read that this site might lend a clue as to how a particular store is coded even though it applies to Visa and not MC:
https://www.visa.com/supplierlocator/

It returns a result for both my local produce markets. In the case of Country Club Produce it returns GENERAL MERCHANDISE - 5399. In the case of Rorabecks Plants and Produce it returns CONVENIENCE STORES - 5499. In the case of Publix, Winn-Dixie, and Save-A-Lot it returns GROCERY STORES / SUPERMARKETS / BAKERIES - 5411. It's a bit tricky using the search engine to get a result. Often it works better on a partial entry rather than the complete name. For example, I can find Walmart by typing in 'wal', but not 'walmart'. That's because it's spelled wal-mart! My local Walmart is coded as GROCERY STORES / SUPERMARKETS / BAKERIES - 5912,5411. Interestingly several Walmarts in my area were coded as DRUG STORES - 5912 and another Walmart a few towns away was coded as DISCOUNT STORES / WAREHOUSE / WHOLESALE - 5912,5310. That may explain why some don't register as 5%.

We receive the 5% cash back at our local Walmart superstore. Does anyone know if one earns 5% at walmart.com. We often order site to store from walmart.com

As mentioned, Sam's Club earns just 1%. Today I purchased a Walmart gift card at Walmart and used it at Sam's Club to earn the 5% cash back. I learned that the same trick will work when making purchases at walmart.com, but haven't tested it yet. I did learn online that the Walmart gift card must have a scratch off PIN to work at walmart.com. The one I purchased today did have it.

I just downgraded my BCP to BCE. The rep assured me that I wouldn't jeopardize the promotions nor the $55 in rewards already earned. I'm also hoping for a pro-rata refund of annual fee. She also assured me that if I don't make additional purchases I can request the $155 back as a check once the next statement comes out. As mentioned, I plan to use our two SM's going forward to realize my grocery rewards. Hopefully, balancing the caps between the two SM cards won't turn out to be a big headache.

I would like to have a way to know in advance if I should use the SM card to purchase an item on Amazon or whether I should first purchase an Amazon gift card and use that to make the purchase. Of course, the motivation is to ensure that I earn the 5% cash back.

The Visa merchant code can be determined using this site:
https://www.visa.com/supplierlocator/search/index.jsp#

I've read that the Visa code normally applies equally to MasterCard. On the surface one would think that a merchant not listed as a bookstore would not earn the 5% and one should purchase items using an Amazon gift card. It would be interesting to receive specific examples of MarketPlace merchants that earned the 5% cash back to see what merchant code they were listed under

I use the Amazon gift cards regularly now - putting things in my cart, finding out the total, then buying a gift card for that amount.

I hope it would work for Discover and Freedom in season, too, for slightly more/much more than 1 cent per point on 5% categories.

This way I don't have to worry about merchant codes. If I needed to return something, I could use the gift card balance some other time.
Love: IHG, Platinum, Sallie Mae, AA Plat, CSP
Like: Discover, ED, BCE, Hyatt, Arrival, Freedom
Might drop: BrooksBros, Prestige (Costco PC?)
Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when
