Discover - redeem for statement credits or bank deposit; buy gift cards with up to $5 bonus; redeem points to purchase at partner retailers (Amazon is one); Discover gift cards; or charity donations. Freedom - statement credits or bank deposit, gift cards (no bonus); redeem points for Amazon purchases. Discover wins on gift card bonuses and retail partners.

Correction, with Discover's partner gift cards the redemption bonus is not "up to" $5, it's a minimum of $5. There are quite a few that give a lot more, like cruise lines doubling your value (spend $60 in rewards, get a $120 gift card) for example.

Until recently, I would have leaned toward the Chase Freedom because you can redeem CB more easily.

Now that Discover has no minimum for CB redemption, I'd say that I favor it more. In 2015 I'll probably use the it more than the Freedom.
Citi Forward ($10.1K), AmEx Blue Cash Everyday ($30K), Chase Freedom ($12.4K), Discover it ($5.5K), Barclaycard Arrival ($12.5K), L.L. Bean Visa ($5K). FICO 806 (TU), 812 (EQ), 806 (EX).
