Looking to add 1-2 more cards

Postby ReallyBoredMan » Wed Aug 27, 2014 9:37 pm

Hey Everyone,

I was thinking about adding an additional card or two to my current two cards.

BCP: I use mainly for groceries and gas
Discover IT: I got this card for the revolving 5%, right now it is gas so I have been using that instead of BCP

I'm looking to add at least 1 master card/visa card, just because not every place accepts Discover or AMEX.

What I was thinking about getting. Getting the AMEX Fidelity for 2% back to be used everywhere, and/or a master card/visa that might give 3%+ on other select items.

I was thinking of also just getting the capital one quicksilver card for the 1.5% on everything and not split hairs on the 3%/2%/1.5%

I can only see myself using the additional card at restaurants/fast food/convince stories/other misc places. I do not travel at all, so the miles do not really interest me.

So you guys have any suggestions as to what card(s) I should look into getting?

It just depends on how much you spend on what. Fidelity AMEX is a good uncategorized spending card if you have investments with them or open a cash management account. Otherwise quicksilver is decent if you don't have much category spending.

If you spend a decent amount on restaurants and fast food, the US Bank Cash+ would be a good card to start with. You can essentially get 6.25% back on those categories -- only drawback is you have to apply in branch.
Current Strategy

Chase Freedom + Discover IT + Churning

I applied over the phone. No branches within 100 miles of Houston according to their site.

US Bank's Cash+ is a good option. Rather than Cap One's QS, see if you can qualify for NFCU membership and get the 1.5% cash back Visa card there - you'd have a higher limit and better customer service.

Chase Freedom would also be good but its 5% reward categories correlate somewhat with Discover's.

Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

Thanks for all the help.

I did call US Bank to see if I could apply over the phone, the person I spoke with insisted that I have to go to a branch store to apply. He said that he would not do it over the phone so I gave up on that one for now.

I did however stumble across the Upromise card, which seems to be a nice fit for what I need.

5% back on online store (don't really plan on using it, might check it out but I have seen the reviews about the issues people have had, probably going to stick with discover store).
4% at SELECT restaurants (Main thing that was appealing to me) +2%-8% after reaching levels of spending. After a quick scan on "eligible" restaurants it looks mainly available at bars, and take out spots (pizza, Chinese, ect), which works for me, those are really the only places that we go to anyway. While the 5% would have been nice from US Bank, the 4%+ seems to fit what I was looking for.
3% Gas (Already have other cards to cover it, Discover with 5% until October)
2% Movie theaters (A nice little bonus, I don't go to the movies that often, but its better than nothing.)
1% Everything else

If I move away from my from I currently live (Live somewhat close to a college campus), then I might try again with US Bank.

AMEX - 6% Groceries, 3% gas when on a category
Discover It - Discover store and 5% category
Upromise master card - 4%+ on select restaurants and 1% on everything else

Many people love the Fidelity AMEX card. But I would suggest going with Citi's new DoubleCash offering. More acceptance being a MC.
