Costco Gas doesn't count as a gas station for non-TrueEarnings AMEX cards

Postby tschmelcher » Sat Jul 26, 2014 3:10 pm

I was surprised to discover on my AMEX BCP billing statement today that purchases of gas at Costco count as "Other Eligible Purchases" and only earn 1% cash back, even though AMEX TrueEarnings counts them as gas and gives 3% cash back! Thought people should know. :)

From the terms and conditions for Blue Cash cards:
2% on eligible purchases of gasoline at gas stations located in the U.S. (superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline are not considered gas stations)

So not just Costco, other superstores with gas stations are also excluded.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

This is actually the fact that kept me from getting additional AMEX cards. My True Earnings is my primary card, and I didn't see anything better for my spending pattern.

TrueEarnings is definitely a great card, but I suppose a Fidelity Amex would be better for warehouse purchases - getting 2% cash back instead of 1%. The customer service at FIA isn't supposed to be as good, but it does seem odd that the Costco Amex isn't the best rewards card to use at Costco.

If you buy any groceries away from Costco - little things here and there - then the BCE might make sense.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May

Fidelity would be a good card for stuff I buy inside Costco, except I don't have an account with Fidelity, and not currently planning one. I'm not a big fan of tying my credit cards to accounts I have to have elsewhere. I have made only one exception - and that is having the True Earnings, having which is contingent upon my Costco membership.

As for BCE, I don't buy much groceries outside of Costco, and there are a few grocery stores that refuse to accept Amex altogether. Because I'm an executive member at Costco, I also get an additional 2% back from Costco on everything I buy (except gas).

I thought AMEX clearly stated that in its detailed list of reward qualification web page?
