One 5% Category You Never See?

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Tue Jun 03, 2014 12:21 am

I was looking at the various 5% cash back categories from Chase Freedom, US Bank Cash+, and Discover It.

I noticed that none of them ever seem to offer 5% off at liquor stores.

It's certainly a practical category for many people. And, from an ethical standpoint, (I think) spending at liquor stores earns a base rate of cash back, and alcohol purchased at a grocery store would earn any special grocery rate. I don't know how the special cash back policies might conflict with state excise taxes and price controls, though.

They could launch a new card and call it the DrunCard :ppp

Or has some issuer already done this without my knowledge?

(Author is fully sober but had a lovely glass of malbec with dinner and is easily amused at the time of posting)
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

The liquor stores in my area usually offer a better discount if you pay with cash or debit that would be greater than a regular 5% cash back
March 2011- Wellsfargo Cash Back College Card
May 2012- Chase Freedom
May 2012- Discover IT
August 2012- American Express Blue Cash Everyday

I don't think I can get a cash/debit discount at either of my two local stores but I'll ask.

I know it's a stupid category, but I notice they don't give bonus cash at law firms.
My Cards

Chase Freedom Visa Signature: $5.2K
Capital One Quicksilver Visa: $7.5K
Discover IT: $5.5K
Huntington Voice World Mastercard: $1.6K

In the garden indefinitely.

Some businesses that get a small number of big payments don't take credit cards. A 3% processing fee on a $5000 payment is $150. A lot cheaper to just have a clerk drive to the bank to drop a few checks off at a time.

Plus, lawyers usually use retainers, so they often don't have to do anything until the payment clears. There is no need to have the validity of a check established right at the 'point of sale'. A bad check definitely can be an inconvenience, but it's not like they're giving up $5000 worth of unrecoverable goods.

Not a lawyer, so FastSRT8 or someone else may correct me or have more to add.

Liquor stores would be a great one for 5%.

Maybe 5% for automotive expensives could be cool, to earn easy cash back on automotive maintenance.

Or a card targeting people trying to be health conscious offering 5% on healthcare services and drugstores.

5% electronics stores would be a cool idea (Cash+ is the only one I know of that does this, so its not too common).

I'll try my PRG at liquor stores and see if I get double MR points.

The grocery store I go to (Publix) has a liquor store on the side. I get 3% cash back on my Amex BCE. If you have the preferred you could get 6%! It does say it excludes stores that are like warehouses (Costco).

I can see the appeal and simplicity of a card that just gives 1.5% or 2% cash without category concerns.

Liquor side-stores can always be separately classified with the credit card companies. And I haven't checked if Freedom counts bars as restaurants for 5% spending, but it seems a rather subjective distinction, if there is one.
