Best Sign-Up Bonuses without Annual Fee

Postby go2014 » Mon Jun 02, 2014 4:41 pm

Does anyone know what the most generous sign-up bonuses are right now for cards without an annual fee and that don't require a huge spending amount within the first 3 months (less than 2k)?

Depends what you're looking for, do you mean cash back cards or travel cards?
My Cards

Chase Freedom Visa Signature: $5.2K
Capital One Quicksilver Visa: $7.5K
Discover IT: $5.5K
Huntington Voice World Mastercard: $1.6K

In the garden indefinitely.

Cash back cards. I've yet to find a travel card that has a good sign-up bonus without a yearly fee kicking in after or during the first year.

Without the annual fee, you probably aren't getting much more than $100-200 as a signup bonus. If you really want the large bonus, sign up for a card with an AF that is waived the first year and then downgrade/cancel once the charge shows up on your statement if they won't waive it again. Just make sure that you cash out or transfer your points before doing so.

If you already have a Freedom, I would suggest the Chase Sapphire Preferred. $400 sign up bonus (plus another $50 if you add an authorized user) and you can transfer points between accounts. You can also downgrade the card to the non-preferred at the end of the year to avoid the fee.

I opened an Amex PRG a few weeks ago. The $175 annual fee is waived the first year. The sign-up bonus is 50,000 MR points after spending $1,000 in the first three months.

MR points aren't cash, but you can get a variety of gift cards on a 1 MR point = $0.01 basis. Spending on Amazon, you only get 70% of that - but $350 of Amazon spending ability is still a good bonus!
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

I'll keep that one in mind. Does anyone know of any 0 annual fee cards (that I would have to cancel) that give a sizable bonus with around $1000 in spending within the first 90 days?
