Churning in trouble?

Postby MB131174 » Sun Jun 01, 2014 6:02 pm

I know AmEx has tightened the belt on multiple bonus sign-up offers. Looks like Chase will now give the sign-up bonus of 2 free nights to first time Hyatt Visa card holders only. I'm wondering if the days of churn n burn are coming to an end?

Not really. I've gotten the new sign up bonus on the Freedom card more than once. Had one years ago. Got the bonus. Barely used the card. Canceled. Signed up again this year. Approved. Sign up bonus.

Those were likely different products. If you originally had a CSP MC and cancelled, then signed up for a CSP Visa, you'd get a second bonus. If you had the original Ink Bold MC, cancelled, then signed up for the new Ink Bold MC (there was a change about two years ago) or got an Ink Bold Visa when Chase switched over, you'd get a second bonus.

But, Chase has never allowed bonuses for a second account of the exact same product.

Way to be obtuse.

Did your first Freedom start with 5x categories? Because until March of 2010, Freedom had 3x categories, not 5x. It used to automatically select your bonus categories based on highest spend instead of offering set, quarterly bonus categories. Chase used to add $50 to your rewards every time you reached $200.

Different rewards = different product.

Relative newbie here... Is there a time that a card must stay open for you to retain your sign-up bonus? i.e. if I were to get the Barclay Arrival and acquire the $400 bonus after three months, and then spent my rewards and closed the card within a year, is that okay?

Thanks
