    Default 1 in 8 Americans w/o food

    Taken from CNN.

The freshest statistics, covering 2007, were served up this week by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

An estimated 36.2 million people struggled with some form of hunger (or, to use the government term, “food insecurity.”)

That’s 12.2 percent of the population – one in eight Americans.

With outrageous grocery prices and no jobs I can believe it. Then there are those of us who can afford food but are not eating the healthiest food because we can't afford it. I would estimatet that to be true for at least half of Americans. Fresh fruits and veggies are so expensive now you need to take out a second mortgage to afford a container of berries.

What we are about to see is a wave of false reports of people claiming their grocery charges on their credit card bill are fraudulent charges so they don't have to pay them.

What I find particularly peculiar is that grocery store prices are often equal to or exceed fast food and restaurant prices. It's no wonder Americans eat out more and grocery shop less. Grocery stores need to get their prices more in check again.

Why haven't grocery prices came back down yet? They were blaming it on high gas prices for transportation costs but now those are down.

I don't know if the grocery prices are that bad or if people are just not able to shop. If I go to for example Publix for groceries I'll end up with a $120 bill. If I go with my gf and she decides what to get (which is at the end better and healthier) we are ending up spending $60-$70. So I decided to no longer go grocery shopping

I don't know how your GF is pulling that off. Are you sure she isn't saving money by doing the five finger discount with some of those groceries? :p

I always spend more the healthier I buy because the produce is so expensive now. If you want to buy a few basic ingredients to make a salad you're spending $15 to $20 for if you're putting a few different veggies in it.

No idea how she is doing it however she always gets the better stuff and ends up spending almost half of that what I would. Never thought about the five finger technique though

I know this Thanksgiving many of the food banks only had a fraction of the food to give out that they usually do. They had less donations and more using them.
