I've done this. I went from having an Access Checking account to a regular to a premier Joint account with my wife. I also just recently was able to get a Pier 1 Imports Card and Chase Freedom card.

I also paid off all negative things impacting my credit during this time (Over the course of 2 years), and the further I was away from that date of clearing my credit, it improved to the point that I can be in this position now.

If you manage it correctly, it can help you.

This is weird, never had a bank run CR on me for a checking account...Just 2 years ago I had to open a checking with a regional bank and never saw any CR pulls with the big 3 from that bank.
