Angry HSBC cancelling cards if no activity!? WHAT??

I thought the readers of this forum would like to know that HSBC (Account Central) is cancelling cards with no activity for 4 or more months. I had a card with a $0 balance and a $3800 credit limit, and HSBC cancelled the card as of 9/16/2009 with NO warning whatsoever.

Needless to say, I am far from happy because I was about to use the card again for a new online project. In fact, I am quite angry.

During my phone conversation with the account manager he reminded me that HSBC can cancel ANY card for ANY reason at ANY time. But, even he was amazed that HSBC had cancelled my card under the circumstances noted above.

If anyone has an HSBC (Account Central) credit card, I strongly advise them to close the account and move your business to some other line of credit. If you can't cancel the card ( for whatever reason), I advise you to do no more business with this unethical corporate entity.

4 months? That's ridiculously low. Have they publicly announced this policy yet?

That is not very long at all. I know plenty of people, myself included, who may go a few months without using a card. I can understand if someone goes a year or two, but even then I think the person should first be sent a letter notifying them if they don't use their card it will be canceled in 45 or 60 days. It should not just happen out of the blue.
Disclosure: I am a moderator/paid staff of this site, which does have advertising relationships with some credit cards that are discussed. Regardless, anything I say is my honest opinion.

    Current Cards:
American Express: Blue Cash, Simply Cash Bank of America: WorldPoints Platinum Plus Chase: Amazon, British Airways, Cash Plus Rewards, Freedom, Ink Cash Citi: Thank You Premier, Dividend Platinum Select Discover: More
Primary Everyday Card: American Express Blue Cash
Primary Travel Card: Citi Thank You Premier

I lost a card to their apparently now old 6mo rule. I was researching their 2% rewards card a short while ago (2mo?) and came across an article saying that they wanted out of the US credit card market and were seeking a buyer. If they could not get a buyer they were going to 'work down' the accounts just as they were doing with their loan accounts. To help them out I called and canceled my GM card.

It looks like you have been worked down.

That's right, RF. CapOne is buying or trying to buy HSBC U.S. cc biz. RBC is another that is being bought. These banks couldn't cut it in the U.S. retail mkt. I had an HSBC card for a while. I got it just to see what it was like. I didn't like their website, customer service, etc. I also had a online deposit account with them that I didn't like either.

HSBC used to bill itself as the world's bank. I've found that "global" banks like HSBC, and Citi for that matter, seem to make much greater use of offshore call centers. It seems that more U.S.-focused banks, such as Chase, Wells Fargo, etc. are less likely to do that.
    CARDS (and why)
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (best cash back excepting 5% cards), Fidelity Visa (spare)
Chase: Freedom (only for 5% reward categories, purchases under $10), Sapphire (not in use), Amazon Rewards (for Amazon purchases only)
CapitalOne: No Hassle Rewards (no foreign transaction fee, my only MasterCard, not in use)
Amex: Blue Cash Everyday (not in use)
Discover: More (only for 5% reward categories)

I have no issues with this card. Additionally i have had late fees reversed, the denied application reconsidered, CLI and 2% cash back. My interest went up to 14% but still better than Chase.
