Default What is the best credit monitoring service to use?

What method do you pros use to keep track and monitor your credit score? The free credit reports don't give you a score. Do you pay for the monthly monitoring services like FreeCreditScore.com (~$15/mo) or do you buy each report as needed? If so, how often?

Unlike what I originally thought, I have now learned that soft credit checks won't hurt your score. I used to avoid checking to avoid taking a credit hit.

One more question: I have just begun my first mortgage this December and because of this process have become more aware of my score and of the credit cards I carry. I want to open a new card based on recommendations on this site. Should I wait a certain time after starting this mortgage or can I get to it now?

    Thanks!

I use USAAcredit monitor service and am satisfied with them. By "i have just begun my first mortgage".....does this mean you have closed on the loan? If so you can apply for new credit anytime you want. If you just applied for a mortgage then do not apply for any new credit until you loan has closed.

Mortgage loans are not like credit cards and don't monitor your credit report after closing. This type of transaction is a one time event and the least risky for the lender.
