just curious, what do the different credit card brands mean to you? for example:

    amex: affluent
discover: sears (i can't get the fact that discover was started by sears out of my head)
    visa/mc: universal acceptance
    jcb: japan

Amex: Customer Service, Old school trying to reshape to the times.
Discover: Rewards (first CC I remember to offer any type of rewards)
    Visa/MC: Ubiquitous

Visa/MC: don't mean anything; issuing bank is all that matters; however, Visa might (unjustifiably) confer a bit more prestige among some.
Amex: platinum/gold=heavy travelers/business users or those who want to appear so; others=generally for aspirational, status-conscious.
Discover: some might perceive it as an alternative to the "big" banks, faceless institutions, but there's nothing more warm and fuzzy about it than any of the other card choices.
    CARDS (and why)
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (best cash back excepting 5% cards), Fidelity Visa (spare)
Chase: Freedom (only for 5% reward categories, purchases under $10), Sapphire (not in use), Amazon Rewards (for Amazon purchases only)
CapitalOne: No Hassle Rewards (no foreign transaction fee, my only MasterCard, not in use)
Amex: Blue Cash Everyday (not in use)
Discover: More (only for 5% reward categories)

Visa/MC: Great acceptance, but all that really matters is the underlying bank, which could range from Orchard to Barclay
Amex: Better rewards and better customer service. Lower acceptance than V/MC. Higher standards and fees impute somewhat of a prestige.
Discover: Pioneer of cash back. Reigning chap of gimmicky promotions. Acceptance getting better.

    Visa/MC: The standard
Amex: High-end, wealthy, or status conscious. Those who expect higher quality and better customer service.
Discover: Not really accepted everywhere, so, no comment

Visa/MC: The default. If the merchant takes cards, they take Visa/MC. Visa Signature: Most perks on par with Amex.

Amex: Claims no preset spending limit when there is one. Most perks on par with Visa Signature, uniquely useful in certain cases involving travel, sometimes not accepted.

Discover: Sometimes not accepted, company over-spends on marketing while reducing rewards, replaced my 5% off gas card with a 2% off gas card, does not offer perks found on Visa Signature/MC World/Amex. Significantly lower credit line than other cards.
BofA Cash Rewards: 3% rewards on gas, 2% on groceries ($1500 quarterly cap).
Chase Freedom: 5% rewards in various rotating categories ($1500 quarterly cap).
Discover Open Road: 2% rewards on restaurants ($250 monthly cap).
Fidelity Investment Rewards Amex and Visa Signature: 2% and 1.5% cash back everywhere (no cap).
