Question Does upgrading a current credit card affect credit (hard pull?)

Just a straightforward question: I'm thinking of "upgrading" my Capital One student rewards card to the Cash Rewards card (does Capital One even do "upgrading" of cards?) and I was wondering if doing so requires Capital One to do a hard pull on my credit, which would lower my scores.

    Thanks!

Speaking from personal experience, I think it depends on the company and it depends on the kind of upgrade you're getting.

    For example:

I got upgraded about a year ago on my Student Blue from American Express to the regular Blue from American Express without a hard pull (I asked before they did the upgrade) and recently, the credit rep has been talking to me about 'upgrading' it further to a Cash rewards card (without a hard pull).

I got upgraded to a Signature card on my Amazon from Chase about a month or two ago without a hard pull (I asked before they did the upgrade) though they DID hard pull me one year ago when they upped my CL and did a BT for me.

I got upgraded from a Macy's + American Express to a Preferred Macy's + American Express without a hard pull a long time ago (I asked before they did the upgrade).

Hopefully someone else who has specific experience with Capitol One might be able to give you a better possible answer.

Also, it never hurts to call the card company and make a general inquiry.

Mostly soft pull. If the bank is recommending the upgrade (EX. US Bank upgraded my Northwest card to Flex) then it i 100% soft pull.
