I realize this is an old comment, but here's my answer anyway: I would probably just show them my ID in that situation. To be honest I don't find it that big of a deal, but it's nice to know whether or not I can feel safe carrying only my credit card (as long as I stay in-state I'm good xP). I could've sworn I've been ID'ed plenty of times before...but maybe all those memories are from times out of state.

In Spain, every merchant will ask for you to show your ID even if you type your PIN instead of signing.

If you pay three times in the same shop you will be asked to show your ID three times.
