Customer Service of Different Lenders

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Wed May 14, 2014 2:39 pm

I've read a lot of people have disliked the treatment they get at Capital One, especially when it comes to upgrading subprime cards into prime cards. Are cardholders with Quicksilver or Venture cards generally disappointed with customer service? I would especially like to hear from anyone who has had both (CO prime and subprime) and can give a useful comparison.

I've also read the quality of service from Amex has been falling recently. Have I just found a few anecdotes or is there some consensus around this?

I'm fairly new to cards and haven't had a charge dispute/charge denial/fraud problem yet, so I don't have experience with complicated problems. I have found that when I had questions about my cards, Chase customer service was decent, and Discover was slightly better.
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
Plan to PC: Prestige to DC
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival and Brooks Bros

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH

I have had their subprime cards, and one of their prime cards the green one with 1.5% back. The customer service for both was equally atrocious in my experience. It's likely the same people doing it.

Amex foreign customer service is very little better than Cap One in my experience. If you call and get a foreign rep you can ask to be transferred tot he US. The US Amex customer service is excellent.

I'm curious. When you ask to be transferred to the US do you encounter any resistance, or do they seem to get offended?

AmEx US reps are usually quite good. I have had the best experiences with Chase, better than Discover, but it's always YMMV. I have a Cap One but I've never used it or dealt with them so I can't comment on that.

In the past year or so I had 1 rep from BOA and 1 rep from Amex that acted very unprofessional. I don't make it a mission to make a complaint so if you act unfriendly/rude (D-) to friendly/professional (A+) that's a pass. As long as they get the things I ask for done I am good. When you act carelessly & unprofessional that's a F for fail and I make myself heard and talk to the their superior.

It's all anecdotal when you're relying on forum postings and any amount you can read is going to be "few" in the grand scheme of things.

It has been hit and miss with AmEx for me but I haven't been specifically requesting US reps and use online messaging with them. You'll probably see less complaints from Platinum and Centurion holders though since they have different reps.

I haven't yet done this as I haven't called them in a while. I don't think there would be an issue.
