CSP Vs. PRG for a flight?

Postby nismoZtuner » Wed May 07, 2014 4:09 pm

I want to book a flight to Puerto Rico from Cali. for June- flight cost about 840 round trip

My question is which of the two will make me a better deal points wise. whose are worth more?

For Chase i have 49,848 points.

with Amex i have 35,345 points.

Not really sure what you're asking. Obviously the PRG will earn you more points because it's 3x on travel versus 2x (plus the 7% annual dividend) on the CSP.

If you mean which card will the points you earn be more valuable with I'd say the CSP because they have better transfer partners for airlines and hotels than Amex does.

Earn another 152 points on the CSP and transfer to United. You receive 1.68 cents of value per point that way. You only receive 1.25 cents per point if you use them to cover the cash cost of the flight.

EDIT - Ok - I lied. No saver awards from SAC-SJU in June.

So, CSP points are worth 1.25 cents for travel. MR points are only worth 1 cent.

I suggest you book through UR, use the points, and pay the remainder with the CSP. You'll spend all your points, pay about $217 out of pocket, and earn 651 points back. (You get 3 points per dollar on the amount you spend - 2 for "travel", one for going through UR.)

With the Amex, you'll pay the $840 up front, earn 2520 MR points (3x airfare), and redeem 35,000 points for $350 back. That's $490 out of pocket and a remaining balance of 2865 points.

Awesome, thank you- that was my question!

So I'll use my UR points for the flight! And just keep the MR points a bit longer!

Thanks!

I didn't explain my self much. . But I just wanted to make sure which one will I save more with. . With CSP I'll end up paying less than $200 out of my pocket compared to Amex..
