Help with picking a new Credit Card

Postby Mike7300 » Mon Feb 17, 2014 9:17 am

Hi,

I have a credit score of over 700, never late with payments, do not use a car too much, spend about 2-3K per month using a credit card. Dine out a good amount and buy lots of concert tickets.

I have a Citi Preferred Mastercard (which i like for the 2% dining and using for ticketmaster presales)

Chase Freedom Visa (5% cash back on categories)
This is the main card i was using for a while but i don't think the points are all that great. I have switched over to using Citi more.

Possibilities i have looked at are upgrading my Citi to the one with the annual fee, Amazon credit card-since i do a lot of my shopping there and also it has 2% back on dining so it seems better than Citi? And also maybe an american express card so i can get ticket presales...but not sure which one would be best for me. And then also looked at Marriot it has 2% back on dining and the hotel rewards - which when i travel i try staying at marriots, so i do have some points built up there. But i don't travel a ton so not sure if it makes sense for me.

Any suggestions?

AMEX is great for concert presales. It's not so much card dependent as it is a perk of AMEX membership. I get presales notices all the time and have gotten some GREAT seats along the way. With AMEX, one of the things they do apparently is set aside a block of seats in a preferred area and presales recommend these seats first, at a discounted price. They do go fast, but one can also select seating as well at the discounted price. I've gotten some AWESOME seats by using AMEX presales.

As far as the card, just depends on what your needs are from AMEX besides concert presales, if you want a revolver or a charge card. From what you said, sounds like the Blue Cash Preferred may be the card for you.
Retired, and in the process of retiring cards!

Hmm... I don't buy much at supermarkets though, I'm single. And, not much at gas stations or department stores. It doesn't have anything for dining.

I'm a ticket broker and can chime in in the AMEX presale front, they have been great in the past and were the first to give their members presales for shows but their share of the market has gone down. Most major concert promoters are going with Citi Private Pass recently for a lot lf the most popular shows. AMEX still has a lot more presales but Citi has grabbed a lot of the most popular concerts, most theatre still tends to with AMEX though.
